Now he did that by being baptized. 32 00:01:43.200 --> 00:01:46.599 That's how he started. Now, he had already as a child, 33 00:01:46.599 --> 00:01:50.120 been dedicated or confirmed in the temple. When he was 34 00:01:50.159 --> 00:01:52.799 just a baby, he was taken to the temple by 35 00:01:52.920 --> 00:01:56.519 his parents and dedicated and confirmed. Many of you were, 38 00:02:01.879 --> 00:02:05.799 and that's a good thing. But then when Jesus became 39 00:02:05.840 --> 00:02:09.560 an adult at thirty years of age, he was publicly baptized. 40 00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:12.560 Now why did he do that, Well, he wanted to 41 00:02:12.599 --> 00:02:15.159 set a model for us. And he's saying, it's no 42 00:02:15.240 --> 00:02:18.080 longer my parents' faith. When I was a baby, that 43 00:02:18.240 --> 00:02:21.199 was their faith. Now as an adult, this is my faith. 44 00:02:21.240 --> 00:02:24.960 That's why we baptize adults here at Saddleback Church. So Jesus modeled baptism. Then he 48 00:02:37.159 --> 00:02:40.759 went out into the desert. He was tempted for forty days, 49 00:02:40.800 --> 00:02:42.360 and then he came back and he went to an 50 00:02:42.360 --> 00:02:45.000 area for about a year called the area of Galilee. 51 00:02:45.439 --> 00:02:48.000 Now Galilee is a part of Israel that's about the 52 00:02:48.039 --> 00:02:50.680 size of Orange County, and at that time it had 53 00:02:50.680 --> 00:02:55.520 the population of Orange County. According to Josephus the historian, 54 00:02:55.680 --> 00:02:59.159 there were about three million people lived in Galilee during 55 00:02:59.240 --> 00:03:02.280 Jesus day, so it was a very populated area like 56 00:03:02.400 --> 00:03:07.039 Orange County. And for about a year, Jesus goes around healing, 57 00:03:07.639 --> 00:03:12.520 doing miracles, teaching, and he's doing his ministry for about 58 00:03:12.560 --> 00:03:15.719 a year. He was immensely popular at this point in 74 00:03:55.960 --> 00:03:58.719 his ministry. And he went to Nazareth, where he had 75 00:03:58.759 --> 00:04:01.439 been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went 76 00:04:01.560 --> 00:04:06.199 into the synagogue. As was his custom. Jesus went to 77 00:04:06.360 --> 00:04:09.240 church every week. Now, folks, if there's anybody who didn't 78 00:04:09.240 --> 00:04:13.360 need to go to church, it was Jesus. But Jesus 79 00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:16.199 made a custom of going to worship every week. It had been written 100 00:05:14.199 --> 00:05:17.680 hundreds and hundreds of years earlier. You can imagine the shock. Oh yeah, 141 00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:40.800 I know. 142 00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:43.399 Jesus is doing all these miracles, and he's a great teacher, 143 00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:46.199 and he's a great leader, and he's actually healing people. 144 00:07:46.800 --> 00:07:49.279 But this is the guy I grew up with. I'm it. 150 00:08:06.240 --> 00:08:10.439 It sent shockwaves to everybody. Now, as I said, Jesus 151 00:08:10.480 --> 00:08:14.920 was actually quoting reading Isaiah chapter sixty. Some of the 152 00:08:14.920 --> 00:08:17.560 manuscripts leave out a phrase, but Jesus actually adds in 153 00:08:17.639 --> 00:08:20.560 a phrase from Isaiah fifty eight. But the point I 154 00:08:20.600 --> 00:08:23.680 want to point out is this, he'd already been doing 155 00:08:23.720 --> 00:08:26.279 this for a year. Let's look at who Jesus came to help. 185 00:09:47.480 --> 00:09:49.840 And he's very clear. He said I came to Earth 186 00:09:50.120 --> 00:09:53.200 for five different types of people. Later on, he says, 187 00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:56.919 a doctor doesn't come to help the healthy. A doctor 188 00:09:56.960 --> 00:09:59.120 comes to help the sick. And he says there's six 189 00:09:59.240 --> 00:10:03.240 kinds of people, six general categories of people who are hurting. 190 00:10:03.360 --> 00:10:05.720 That I came to help the poor, the broken hearted, 191 00:10:05.759 --> 00:10:08.159 the prisoners, the blind, and the oppressed. Now let's look 192 00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:09.720 at them, and I want to give you a modern 193 00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:12.879 day term for each of these groups. First, Jesus said, 194 00:10:12.919 --> 00:10:15.840 I came for the poor to preach good news to 195 00:10:15.879 --> 00:10:19.159 the poor, and these are who I call the havenots. 196 00:10:19.600 --> 00:10:23.679 You might write that down, the havenots of life. And 197 00:10:23.759 --> 00:10:25.960 there are times in your life that you don't have 198 00:10:26.240 --> 00:10:29.360 what you need. There are times in your life 201 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:39.240 that you are lacking. Jesus says, I came to help 202 00:10:39.679 --> 00:10:44.519 the poor. Now, there are actually three different types of poverty. 203 00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:49.320 You might write these down. First is material poverty. Material 204 00:10:49.360 --> 00:10:51.840 parties when you're out of money, and of course that 205 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:53.840 is a major problem in our world. 206 00:10:53.919 --> 00:10:56.919 Today. Half the world is very poor. 207 00:10:57.399 --> 00:11:00.279 You may not realize this, but of the six billion 208 00:11:00.360 --> 00:11:02.960 people in the world today, half of the world, over 209 00:11:03.039 --> 00:11:06.720 three billion people live on less than two dollars a day. 210 00:11:07.159 --> 00:11:09.519 I'd like to see you try that. Now, think about this. 222 00:11:37.759 --> 00:11:42.600 They grow coffee in Rwanda and they sell it to Starbucks. Now, 223 00:11:42.759 --> 00:11:47.720 the average coffee farmer in Rwanda doesn't make enough in 224 00:11:47.799 --> 00:11:51.759 one day to buy a cup of coffee. There's something 225 00:11:51.799 --> 00:11:56.200 wrong with that. That's called injustice inequity. So there is 226 00:11:56.240 --> 00:11:59.200 physical poverty in world, and Jesus cares about the poor, 227 00:11:59.399 --> 00:12:01.720 and we care about the poor. But there's other kinds 228 00:12:01.759 --> 00:12:04.960 of poverty to do. Second, there's moral poverty. And moral 229 00:12:05.039 --> 00:12:09.600 poverty is when you have a lack of integrity. It's 230 00:12:09.679 --> 00:12:12.080 when you have a lack of the knowledge of right 231 00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:15.720 and wrong. It's when you have lost your moral conscience. 232 00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:18.600 You don't have any desire to do the good thing, 233 00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:21.000 the right thing. You just want to do what's easy 234 00:12:21.080 --> 00:12:23.879 for you, what's best for you. And there are many 235 00:12:23.879 --> 00:12:26.720 people who have moral poverty. They have no morals at all, 236 00:12:26.799 --> 00:12:29.919 They don't know the difference between right and wrong. And 237 00:12:29.960 --> 00:12:33.559 the third kind of poverty is spiritual poverty. And spiritual 238 00:12:33.600 --> 00:12:36.559 poverty is when you don't know all that God planned 239 00:12:36.559 --> 00:12:40.840 for your life. Now, while half the world is materially poor, 240 00:12:41.240 --> 00:12:45.200 most of the world is spiritually poor. They don't know 241 00:12:45.480 --> 00:12:48.279 the good news. She said, 253 00:13:19.559 --> 00:13:23.320 it's not physical poverty, it's spiritual poverty. It's the poverty 254 00:13:23.320 --> 00:13:26.080 of being unloved. It's the poverty of loneliness. When people say, oh, 263 00:13:51.120 --> 00:13:54.200 I broke his heart, that's actually a Bible phrase. It's 264 00:13:54.279 --> 00:13:58.039 thousands of years old. It's in Psalms sixty nine, verse twenty, 265 00:13:58.159 --> 00:14:02.200 where David says this, indults have broken my heart. That's 266 00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:06.480 the first use of the idea broken heart. It comes 267 00:14:06.480 --> 00:14:08.519 from the Bible. When anybody talks about it, I had 268 00:14:08.519 --> 00:14:12.200 a broken art. It's from the Bible, and it's an 269 00:14:12.240 --> 00:14:15.720 idea of having Do you know that there's actually a 270 00:14:15.960 --> 00:14:18.639 broken heart syndrome.
