No, 147 00:09:11.360 --> 00:09:14.960 this is not a John Grisham novel. It's the unknown 148 00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:19.759 legend of the Cincinnati Strangler. This was a major serial 149 00:09:19.840 --> 00:09:23.639 killer in nineteen sixty six that barely anyone has heard of. 150 00:09:25.240 --> 00:09:28.799 Boston Strangler was well known from sixty two to sixty four, 151 00:09:30.200 --> 00:09:33.440 the term serial killer had not yet been coined, but 152 00:09:33.559 --> 00:09:36.279 I think with the Boston Strangler, people started to realize 153 00:09:36.360 --> 00:09:40.519 that there were killers who did kill multiple victims with 154 00:09:40.679 --> 00:09:44.159 a passage of time. And suddenly, in October of nineteen 155 00:09:44.200 --> 00:09:48.480 sixty five, we had a woman named Elizabeth Creco attacked 156 00:09:48.559 --> 00:09:54.320 in the Walnut Hills neighborhood, strangled into unconsciousness, raped, but 157 00:09:54.480 --> 00:09:57.399 she did survive, and that is considered to be the 158 00:09:57.480 --> 00:09:59.879 beginning of the Cincinnati Strangler saga. 159 00:10:02.320 --> 00:10:05.120 Now, what are some of these signatures and the mo 160 00:10:05.759 --> 00:10:08.679 of this person. Right from the beginning, you say she 161 00:10:08.759 --> 00:10:13.120 was attacked, but she survived. So what was the description 162 00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:15.759 that was out there for police and what was the 163 00:10:15.799 --> 00:10:22.080 description they released, and how did the investigation proceed after 164 00:10:22.200 --> 00:10:22.720 this attack? 165 00:10:25.519 --> 00:10:29.360 Well, she described her attacker as a short, slightly built 166 00:10:29.399 --> 00:10:34.879 black man. She was a white woman. The Strangler, as 167 00:10:34.960 --> 00:10:38.159 he moved through his series of crimes, was known to 168 00:10:39.240 --> 00:10:43.720 improvise a ligature. I think the ligature in each of 169 00:10:43.799 --> 00:10:47.720 the stranglings was different. A pair of stockings, a men's tie, 170 00:10:48.480 --> 00:10:52.600 the belt to a bathrobe, a clothes line. And he 171 00:10:52.679 --> 00:10:58.600 would be someone we'd describe as an unorganized offender, someone 172 00:10:58.679 --> 00:11:03.039 who would base do just a little stalking, pick a 173 00:11:03.159 --> 00:11:07.759 victim of chance, kill the victim, leave them right where 174 00:11:07.759 --> 00:11:10.879 they were murdered, no attempt to cover up any clues 175 00:11:11.200 --> 00:11:14.639 or to cover his own trail. And that would contrast 176 00:11:14.759 --> 00:11:18.559 with an organized serial killer like a Ted Bundy, someone 177 00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:23.559 who had a lengthy stalking behavior, someone who took a 178 00:11:23.679 --> 00:11:29.440 victim and did not create a crime scene, take the 179 00:11:29.519 --> 00:11:34.279 victim across jurisdictional lines, jump the body somewhere. So that 180 00:11:34.440 --> 00:11:36.919 is not what we had in Cincinnati. We had someone 181 00:11:37.039 --> 00:11:41.080 operating in their own comfort zone, taking victims of chance, 182 00:11:41.200 --> 00:11:46.200 basically in this case women that were fifty years of 183 00:11:46.279 --> 00:11:47.039 age and older. 184 00:11:48.799 --> 00:11:53.720 Right, yes, Elizabeth Greco is sixty five years old. In this case, he looped a rope 208 00:13:27.480 --> 00:13:32.240 around Margie Helton's neck, managed to steal ten dollars, but 209 00:13:32.360 --> 00:13:36.240 she screamed, managed to hit her car horn. The attack 210 00:13:36.399 --> 00:13:41.279 was broken off. December second, nineteen sixty five, the first 211 00:13:41.960 --> 00:13:45.159 acknowledged victim of Cincinnati strangler was found. It was fifty 212 00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:48.679 six year old Emajeen Harrington. She had just come home. 213 00:13:49.240 --> 00:13:54.159 It was a Thursday afternoon. The Claremont apartments very nice neighborhood, 214 00:13:54.559 --> 00:13:58.000 very nice, broad daylight. She went looking for the janitor 215 00:13:58.519 --> 00:14:01.480 of the building to help her carry in groceries, and 216 00:14:01.559 --> 00:14:05.919 somewhere in the basement of this cavernous apartment building she 217 00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:10.080 ran into the Cincinnati strangler. She was hit a crushing 218 00:14:10.120 --> 00:14:16.919 blow to the head, taken down, raped, strangled, and left 219 00:14:16.960 --> 00:14:19.960 there in a an a basement restroom, and the janitor 220 00:14:20.039 --> 00:14:23.600 she'd been looking for found her body.
