But of course the founding fathers knew, along 1727 01:40:17.920 --> 01:40:22.000 with most other political theoris, you know, many hundreds of 1728 01:40:22.119 --> 01:40:25.800 years ago, understood that ultimately a constitution is only the 1729 01:40:25.880 --> 01:40:28.199 reflection of the values of the people, and if the 1730 01:40:28.239 --> 01:40:31.359 people are not themselves invested in any of these rights, 1731 01:40:31.399 --> 01:40:33.039 the fact that they happen to be written down on 1732 01:40:33.119 --> 01:40:36.239 paper doesn't actually protect them.
