Because of its size, Aurora is actually 89 00:05:10.680 --> 00:05:14.959 situated in four different counties, Caine County, DuPage County, Kendall County, 90 00:05:14.959 --> 00:05:17.759 and Will County. Currently, Waitityia 119 00:06:44.079 --> 00:06:46.360 is our oldest case on record, and as the date 120 00:06:46.399 --> 00:06:49.279 of this recording, we have not located any other area 121 00:06:49.360 --> 00:06:53.199 missing people from Kane County that are similar to Waitiria's case. 122 00:06:54.519 --> 00:06:56.560 Last season, Chris and I talked about the Ripper Crew, 123 00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:58.759 and we know that during the nineteen eighties they were 124 00:06:58.800 --> 00:07:01.839 active in the western suburbs Chicago. In fact, they were 125 00:07:01.879 --> 00:07:03.680 even active in the fall of nineteen eighty two when 126 00:07:03.680 --> 00:07:06.480 Waiteria vanished. A number of their victims were black women 127 00:07:06.519 --> 00:07:09.079 who were alone, but most of their known victims remains 128 00:07:09.079 --> 00:07:11.879 have been recovered, and they were typically recovered within months 129 00:07:11.879 --> 00:07:14.319 of their murder. We certainly can't rule out that some 130 00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:17.279 unknown offender abducted or harmed Whiteria in some way in 131 00:07:17.360 --> 00:07:20.839 Elgin or Juliet, or Aurora or somewhere else, but so 132 00:07:20.920 --> 00:07:22.839 far we haven't found any evidence to link her to 133 00:07:22.879 --> 00:07:26.240 another case like that, or any serial offenders, or even 134 00:07:26.279 --> 00:07:27.519 the Ripper Crew specifically. 135 00:07:28.439 --> 00:07:31.439 Well, while we have not linked Witeria to any active 136 00:07:31.480 --> 00:07:34.519 serial killers or other offenders in the area, it is 137 00:07:34.560 --> 00:07:36.800 still possible that she was a victim of a violent 138 00:07:36.839 --> 00:07:40.160 crime on our way to Aurora or while in Aurora. 139 00:07:40.839 --> 00:07:43.959 So let's consider the option that Waiteria did actually arrive 140 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:46.279 in Aurora and talk about the people that were in 141 00:07:46.279 --> 00:07:48.600 her life when she did live there. The most notable 142 00:07:48.600 --> 00:07:51.360 person perhaps is her husband and the man who reported 143 00:07:51.399 --> 00:07:52.959 her missing, Wayman Jones. 144 00:08:00.720 --> 00:08:02.920 Anytime we look at these old cases, the one thing 145 00:08:02.959 --> 00:08:04.839 we spend a lot of time doing is reviewing criminal 146 00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:07.199 history of all the people involved if they have one, 147 00:08:07.360 --> 00:08:09.120 and we interview as many people as we can who 148 00:08:09.160 --> 00:08:11.279 knew the victim or any suspects around that time that 149 00:08:11.319 --> 00:08:13.839 the case happened. Typically we start with the missing person 150 00:08:13.879 --> 00:08:15.920 because we need to know if they've been arrested, what 151 00:08:15.959 --> 00:08:17.800 type of background they have, things like that. 152 00:08:18.439 --> 00:08:19.439 For this case, we. 153 00:08:19.439 --> 00:08:21.600 Know that Waiteria did not have any criminal history in 154 00:08:21.639 --> 00:08:23.480 her background and that she was never arrested. 155 00:08:24.199 --> 00:08:27.319 As for Wayman Jones, he died in twenty thirteen, so 156 00:08:27.680 --> 00:08:30.639 while we can't interview him about the case or his background, 157 00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:32.840 we can review his criminal history to get a sense 158 00:08:32.840 --> 00:08:44.000 of his background. On May nineteenth, nineteen eighty Wayman Jones 159 00:08:44.039 --> 00:08:46.559 was arrested by the Chicago Police Department in the tenth 160 00:08:46.559 --> 00:08:49.919 District of Chicago for a simple battery. The tenth District 161 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:52.480 is located on the West Side of Chicago and includes 162 00:08:52.519 --> 00:08:56.559 the neighborhoods of North Lawndale, Little Village, and Lower West Side. 163 00:08:56.879 --> 00:08:59.679 The records that we have document that Wyman was living 164 00:08:59.720 --> 00:09:02.440 in a when he was arrested, but he clearly still 165 00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:04.679 had ties to the city of Chicago, where he and 166 00:09:04.720 --> 00:09:07.799 Whityria lived prior to their move to Aurora. The problem 167 00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:10.320 was that for months we didn't know who the victim 168 00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:13.360 was in that case or the circumstances surrounding it. And 169 00:09:13.399 --> 00:09:15.759 because it is over forty five years old, the arrest 170 00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:18.559 records for a simple battery case are far beyond the 171 00:09:18.639 --> 00:09:22.480 retention period, so many records like that no longer exist. 172 00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:25.480 Longtime listeners who will recall that when Andrew and Matt 173 00:09:25.519 --> 00:09:27.840 tried to find records from the nineteen eighty three case 174 00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:30.519 related to the person who left the series of beaver 175 00:09:30.600 --> 00:09:34.600 squeezer letters in Susannah's car at PM Bentley's, those cases 176 00:09:34.639 --> 00:09:37.279 no longer existed, so we were afraid that the same 177 00:09:37.399 --> 00:09:38.679 might be true in this case. 178 00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:41.799 Luckily, Chris was able to get some records from the 179 00:09:41.879 --> 00:09:44.480 archives of the Chicago Police Department, and we learned that 180 00:09:44.480 --> 00:09:46.919 the case involved a juvenile at a school in Chicago. 181 00:09:47.399 --> 00:09:49.639 Weyman at the time was working at the Chicago Public 182 00:09:49.639 --> 00:09:52.200 School System and the complainant for the case appeared to 183 00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:53.840 be the mother of a child at a school where 184 00:09:53.840 --> 00:09:56.360 he was working in nineteen eighty. The report is brief, 185 00:09:56.519 --> 00:09:58.279 but we can at least say that Waitia was not 186 00:09:58.320 --> 00:10:01.159 the victim in that case. Initially, we were concerned that 187 00:10:01.240 --> 00:10:04.080 she might be because the Illinois Domestic Violence Act wasn't 188 00:10:04.080 --> 00:10:06.919 passing Illinois until several years after the nineteen eighty arrest, 189 00:10:07.399 --> 00:10:10.000 a domestic battery as a statutory offense wasn't on the 190 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:12.720 books until nineteen ninety. Our initial thought was that this 191 00:10:12.799 --> 00:10:15.000 case could have been a domestic battery and just classified 192 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:17.200 as a simple battery back in nineteen eighty, depending on 193 00:10:17.240 --> 00:10:19.279 how the law was written then. But based on the 194 00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:21.600 records we got from Beth and at Chris Scott, we 195 00:10:21.639 --> 00:10:23.600 now know that Whyteria was living in Elgin in nineteen 196 00:10:23.639 --> 00:10:25.919 eighty when this battery occurred, and she was not the 197 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:26.879 victim in that case. 198 00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:30.919 Yes, so now we know that she was not involved 199 00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:33.879 in that case. So 213 00:11:07.320 --> 00:11:09.960 we have some potential evidence of domestic abuse, and we 214 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:12.360 have this prior arrest for simple battery. 215 00:11:12.440 --> 00:11:15.840 Yes, so we have a family member making allegations of 216 00:11:15.879 --> 00:11:20.000 some physical altercations between Wayman and Wateria. And we also 217 00:11:20.039 --> 00:11:23.360 know from our training and experience that emotional and especially 218 00:11:23.399 --> 00:11:26.120 physical abuse in a relationship can often escalate. 219 00:11:26.919 --> 00:11:29.960 According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, nearly one in 220 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:32.919 four women have experienced rape, physical assault, or stalking in 221 00:11:32.960 --> 00:11:35.879 their lifetime, and according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 222 00:11:36.039 --> 00:11:39.000 seventy six percent of female murderers were perpetrated by someone 223 00:11:39.200 --> 00:11:42.639 known to the victim. That's twenty percent higher than male victims. 224 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:45.600 So statistically, women are much more likely to be killed 225 00:11:45.600 --> 00:11:47.639 by an intimate partner or a person who is known 226 00:11:47.639 --> 00:11:48.639 to them than a man is. 227 00:11:49.240 --> 00:11:52.519 We can also take the reverse approach when looking at statistics. 228 00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:55.759 When looking at stranger murders, only twelve percent of females 229 00:11:55.799 --> 00:12:00.000 were murdered by total strangers versus twenty one percent of men. Again, 230 00:12:00.120 --> 00:12:02.399 and we know that at least from a statistical perspective, 231 00:12:02.600 --> 00:12:05.480 it is much more likely that Wayteria, if she was murdered, 232 00:12:05.519 --> 00:12:08.559 for example, was killed by someone she knew. We want to be clear that 238 00:12:21.639 --> 00:12:24.759 we don't have any reports that Wayman or anyone else 239 00:12:24.919 --> 00:12:27.960 strangled Wayteria in the past, but we thought we would 240 00:12:27.960 --> 00:12:31.080 mention that here since we are talking about domestic violence. 241 00:12:31.360 --> 00:12:33.919 In the Journal of Emergency Medicine in two thousand and seven, 242 00:12:34.080 --> 00:12:37.279 researchers reviewed data from eleven cities and determined that forty 243 00:12:37.279 --> 00:12:39.840 five percent of women who were murdered by an intimate 244 00:12:39.840 --> 00:12:42.919 partner have been non fatally strangled at least one time 245 00:12:43.039 --> 00:12:46.440 prior to that homicide. In fact, a single instance of 246 00:12:46.480 --> 00:12:50.240 non fatal strangulation increased that victim's chances of being murdered 247 00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:53.679 by that suspect by over six hundred percent. While some 248 00:12:53.759 --> 00:12:56.279 of the research is a bit dated, even as recently 249 00:12:56.279 --> 00:13:00.240 as twenty twenty four, organizations like Domestic Shelters dot org 250 00:13:00.440 --> 00:13:03.600 noted that strangulation is the highest predictor of murder. 251 00:13:04.440 --> 00:13:07.039 While they are not related to Iteria's case, our cold 252 00:13:07.080 --> 00:13:11.200 case homicide caseload currently includes three strangulation murders, all from 253 00:13:11.240 --> 00:13:14.120 the nineteen nineties, and all three of them involved women 254 00:13:14.200 --> 00:13:16.440 who were murdered in their own homes. To make them 255 00:13:16.480 --> 00:13:19.799 even more tragic, all three women were mothers. Let's briefly 256 00:13:19.840 --> 00:13:21.480 discuss those three homicides. 257 00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:31.440 On November seventeenth, nineteen ninety two, Ginia lang Goosh was 258 00:13:31.480 --> 00:13:35.000 strangled in her apartment on Saint Charles Street here in Elgin. 259 00:13:35.360 --> 00:13:38.039 She was murdered one day before her thirtieth birthday, and 260 00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:40.080 her two year old son was sleeping in the home 261 00:13:40.240 --> 00:13:43.399 when she was murdered.
