Now, what is the significance 15 00:00:54.119 --> 00:00:57.679 of a hissup stick? Any Jew standing around the cross 16 00:00:57.719 --> 00:01:03.399 would know the meaning of that, because fifteen hundred years earlier, 17 00:01:04.599 --> 00:01:08.120 when Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt 18 00:01:08.760 --> 00:01:13.079 and they had the passovernight, and remember all the firstborn, 19 00:01:13.120 --> 00:01:13.560 we're going to. 20 00:01:13.599 --> 00:01:15.799 Die in Egypt. 21 00:01:16.280 --> 00:01:17.840 And God said, I want you to take a lamb, 22 00:01:17.879 --> 00:01:18.959 and I want you to go, and I want you 23 00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:22.879 to spread the blood on the doors of every Jewish family, 24 00:01:23.200 --> 00:01:26.120 and then we'll pass over. Take a branch of the hissip plant, same plant, 30 00:01:46.640 --> 00:01:49.640 dip it into the bowl filled with blood, and then 31 00:01:49.799 --> 00:01:52.680 wipe the blood on the sides and top of the 32 00:01:52.719 --> 00:01:53.359 door frames. 33 00:01:53.439 --> 00:01:54.359 And that's the symbol. 34 00:01:54.560 --> 00:01:57.000 This is not an Egyptian family, this is a Jewish family. 35 00:01:57.000 --> 00:01:59.319 This is a believing family. They're the ones that are 36 00:01:59.319 --> 00:02:02.760 going free, and they get passed over from the death 37 00:02:02.760 --> 00:02:08.759 and destruction. Now, when the Roman soldiers do this, they 38 00:02:08.759 --> 00:02:11.520 don't have any idea the symbolism's going on. But they 39 00:02:11.560 --> 00:02:14.360 take the same hissip stick, dip it in the water, 40 00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:17.479 and when they hold it to Jesus's mouth, every Jew 41 00:02:17.919 --> 00:02:22.520 around the cross knew what that meant. It was a fulfillment, 42 00:02:22.840 --> 00:02:26.599 It was another symbol. It was another metaphor that the 43 00:02:26.680 --> 00:02:30.199 passover Lamb who saved the lives many years before. 44 00:02:30.639 --> 00:02:31.680 Because of its blood. 45 00:02:32.039 --> 00:02:37.000 Jesus blood was going to save them with a very 46 00:02:37.039 --> 00:02:43.639 powerful symbol. So through these two words I thirst, we 47 00:02:43.719 --> 00:02:47.199 know Jesus is truly a man. And to second, we 48 00:02:47.240 --> 00:02:49.759 know Jesus is truly God. He's the Messiah, He's the 49 00:02:49.800 --> 00:02:51.719 anointed one. He's the one that all these three hundred 50 00:02:51.719 --> 00:02:56.199 and eighty predictions, even that one comes down to being 51 00:02:56.199 --> 00:02:57.919 fulfilled in the last seconds. 52 00:02:58.039 --> 00:02:59.680 But there's a third one. This is important. 53 00:03:00.159 --> 00:03:05.360 It shows how much Jesus loves me. It shows how 54 00:03:05.439 --> 00:03:09.479 much Jesus loves me. That Jesus Christ would go through 55 00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:13.360 all of this pain for me is an amazing thing. 56 00:03:14.680 --> 00:03:18.199 Have you ever gone thirsty to save the life of 57 00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:19.000 somebody else? 58 00:03:19.960 --> 00:03:23.360 I kind of doubt that, but Jesus did. 59 00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:26.719 And Jesus, what he's doing here, the suffering he's going 60 00:03:26.759 --> 00:03:30.159 through on the cross is called redemptive suffering. He hadn't 61 00:03:30.199 --> 00:03:33.199 done anything wrong, he didn't deserve to be punished, he 62 00:03:33.240 --> 00:03:35.439 hadn't sinned, He'd lived a perfect life. 63 00:03:35.639 --> 00:03:36.439 So what is he doing. 64 00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:41.080 He's suffering for the benefit of somebody else. You, He's 65 00:03:41.120 --> 00:03:46.439 suffering for you. He's suffering for you. He's nineteen years old. He was going to 77 00:04:23.639 --> 00:04:28.720 start sattle Back College in the fall, and he went 78 00:04:28.759 --> 00:04:33.240 back east to make a visit of some family. And 85 00:04:57.959 --> 00:05:00.759 it took off, but in a few mon minutes later 86 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:03.839 in the horizon, all of a sudden, it stalled and 87 00:05:03.879 --> 00:05:08.160 it plummeted and it crashed and it killed one hundred 88 00:05:08.199 --> 00:05:11.839 and fifty five people just out of the Detroit airport. 89 00:05:11.879 --> 00:05:13.360 And my brother was on the plane right behind it, 90 00:05:13.399 --> 00:05:16.879 watched it happened, and Rhett was killed. 91 00:05:17.319 --> 00:05:19.360 I did his funeral at Mission Jeo High School. 92 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:23.759 But on that flight, when they started going through the 93 00:05:23.759 --> 00:05:26.160 wreckage and one hundred and fifty five people killed, they 94 00:05:26.199 --> 00:05:30.600 found one lone survivor. It was in every 120 00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:08.319 home that Mother Teresa started, I thirst because she said, 121 00:07:08.519 --> 00:07:12.040 that is the goal of our ministry. That is the 122 00:07:12.079 --> 00:07:16.240 goal of our ministry, even every home for dying. Let 123 00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:17.759 me show you what she said about this. Well, the Bible talks about this 163 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:42.720 emptiness and spiritual hunger. The Book of Amos, chapter eight 164 00:09:42.759 --> 00:09:48.000 says this. The time is coming, God says, when I 165 00:09:48.039 --> 00:09:51.320 will send a famine on the land, and people will 166 00:09:51.320 --> 00:09:55.919 be hungry, but not for bread. And they will be thirsty, 167 00:09:56.759 --> 00:10:00.519 but not for water. They will hunger, and they will 168 00:10:00.519 --> 00:10:04.759 thirst for a message from the Lord. And people will 169 00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:08.320 stagger everywhere, from sea to sea, from the Atlantic to 170 00:10:08.360 --> 00:10:14.480 the Pacific, searching for the word of the Lord. When did we see you, Lord thirsty 197 00:11:46.039 --> 00:11:49.120 and give you something to drink? He 206 00:12:19.879 --> 00:12:25.639 invented every rain, every river, every every every lake, every pond, 207 00:12:25.759 --> 00:12:34.360 the ocean, ice. God invented h two O, the inventor 208 00:12:34.440 --> 00:12:38.080 of water, the creator of water, every drop on the universe, 209 00:12:38.360 --> 00:12:43.840 God created. Now he's hanging on the cross, and he's thirsty. 210 00:12:44.279 --> 00:12:50.480 He certainly could have just done a miracle and given 211 00:12:50.559 --> 00:12:53.960 himself water, you know, caused it the rain. He could 212 00:12:53.960 --> 00:12:56.200 have done any kind of miracle he wanted to to 213 00:12:56.320 --> 00:13:02.600 quench his thirst, but instead get this important Jesus God, 214 00:13:03.240 --> 00:13:06.279 at this point asks for human assistance. 215 00:13:08.559 --> 00:13:11.519 Is I'm thirsty? This guy, in all likelihood, was not a believer, 226 00:13:49.519 --> 00:13:54.840 followed Jesus Christ. He's just a Roman soldier and takes sponge, 227 00:13:54.879 --> 00:13:58.440 sticks it on a hissup stick, dips it in someipaska, 228 00:13:59.080 --> 00:14:01.960 and he offers water to the Son of God. 229 00:14:03.240 --> 00:14:04.840 He realize, what a privilege that would be. 230 00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:08.720 What a privilege to be the person who, when the 231 00:14:08.720 --> 00:14:12.879 Son of God says I'm thirsty, you meet that need. 232 00:14:13.720 --> 00:14:16.759 What a privilege that would have been. You have that 233 00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:19.799 privilege every single day of your life, Jesus said, inasmuch 234 00:14:19.840 --> 00:14:21.720 as you've done it under the least of these my brothers, 235 00:14:21.840 --> 00:14:25.519 you did it to me. In Matthew ten forty two, 249 00:15:17.159 --> 00:15:23.000 Jesus said this, if you give even a cup of 250 00:15:23.039 --> 00:15:27.519 cold water to one of the least of my followers, 251 00:15:28.720 --> 00:15:34.080 you will surely be rewarded, even if you're just giving 252 00:15:34.080 --> 00:15:37.399 water to somebody thirsty. The Bible calls that ministry. See, 253 00:15:37.399 --> 00:15:43.159 we often think ministry is oh, teaching the Bible, leading worship. No, no, no, 254 00:15:43.320 --> 00:15:47.840 ministry is here. Can I give you drink? Is like 255 00:15:47.879 --> 00:15:50.000 to sit down, put your feet up for a minute? 256 00:15:50.679 --> 00:15:52.639 Can I help you out? Can I do an errand 257 00:15:52.679 --> 00:15:55.720 for you? Can I bring you a meal? A cup 258 00:15:55.799 --> 00:16:01.000 of cold water? Jesus says, that's ministry. He said, You're 259 00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:05.720 gonna be rewarded in Heaven for that. For slaking somebody's thirst, 260 00:16:06.240 --> 00:16:12.360 emotional thirst, physical thirst, mental thirst, spiritual thirst. Doing these 261 00:16:12.559 --> 00:16:16.879 simple things. Jesus notices the smallest service you see. What 262 00:16:16.919 --> 00:16:20.000 I've discovered today is that everybody wants to do great 263 00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:25.519 things for God.
