North Vietnam was 86 00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:38.680 supported by the Soviet Union in China, while South Vietnam 87 00:05:38.759 --> 00:05:42.279 was supported by the United States and other anti communist nations. 88 00:05:42.920 --> 00:05:46.040 The conflict was the second of the Indochina Wars and 89 00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:49.680 a major proxy war of the Cold War between the 90 00:05:49.680 --> 00:05:55.360 Soviet Union and the US right and proxy war? How 91 00:05:55.360 --> 00:05:58.480 many times have we seen proxy wars? We saw it 92 00:05:58.560 --> 00:06:02.879 obviously during Vietnam Barred Me. We saw it in Afghanistan 93 00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:06.279 in the eighties, right, and we're seeing it today with 94 00:06:06.439 --> 00:06:09.720 Ukraine and Russia. We are fighting a proxy war. So 95 00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:14.519 this direct US military involvement greatly escalated from nineteen sixty 96 00:06:14.560 --> 00:06:18.680 five until it's withdrawal in nineteen seventy three. The fighting 97 00:06:18.720 --> 00:06:22.680 spilled over into the Laotian and Cambodian Civil Wars, which 98 00:06:22.759 --> 00:06:27.839 ended all three countries becoming communist. The vietnamn led by Ho Chi Minh, you know, 113 00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:32.279 the infamous Ho Chi Mitra, took control of North Vietnam, 114 00:07:32.360 --> 00:07:37.160 while the US assumed financial and military support for South Vietnam, 115 00:07:37.680 --> 00:07:41.399 led by No Din Dim. And I'm sure I said 116 00:07:41.399 --> 00:07:44.360 that wrong. And of course he was another useless stooge 117 00:07:45.240 --> 00:07:48.879 from New Jersey that we sent over there, and apparently 118 00:07:48.959 --> 00:07:52.480 he wasn't up to par, so we ended up killing 119 00:07:52.560 --> 00:07:55.480 him and overthrowing him and installing a new government. The North Vietnamese began supplying, directing the 121 00:08:00.600 --> 00:08:03.879 Viet Cong or the VC, a common front of dissidence 122 00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:07.639 in the South, which intensified a gorilla war. From nineteen 123 00:08:07.720 --> 00:08:11.879 fifty seven now nineteen fifty eight, North Vietnam invaded Laos, 124 00:08:12.360 --> 00:08:17.079 establishing the Hoshi Min Trail. That was to supply and 125 00:08:17.160 --> 00:08:22.160 reinforce the VC, And any time that there is some 126 00:08:22.240 --> 00:08:26.600 type of conflict like that, those type of logistical and 127 00:08:26.680 --> 00:08:31.319 supply trails are the most important to be established. Shocking 230 00:15:36.440 --> 00:15:40.159 right during the Vietnam War, involving you had America, you 231 00:15:40.200 --> 00:15:44.320 had South Vietnamese militaries and a small amount of special 232 00:15:44.320 --> 00:15:49.120 forces and they were from the Australian Army training team 233 00:15:49.159 --> 00:15:52.200 in Vietnam. Now they claim in nineteen seventy the CIA 234 00:15:52.360 --> 00:15:56.080 responsibility of this was phased out and the program was 235 00:15:56.080 --> 00:16:00.679 put under the authority of Courts an acronym for civil 236 00:16:00.759 --> 00:16:06.799 Operations and Revolutionary Development Support. Now they claimed the program, 237 00:16:06.840 --> 00:16:08.879 and this is the official narrative, that it lasted from 238 00:16:08.919 --> 00:16:12.279 sixty eight to seventy two. It was designed to identify 239 00:16:12.440 --> 00:16:19.080 and destroy the viet Cong via infiltration, assassination, torture, capture, 240 00:16:19.639 --> 00:16:24.919 counter terrorism, and interrogation. The Phoenix Program was premised 243 00:16:34.799 --> 00:16:38.240 on the idea that North Vietnamese infiltration had required local 244 00:16:38.320 --> 00:16:43.480 support with non combat civilian populations, which were referred to 245 00:16:43.519 --> 00:16:47.759 as the VC infrastructure and political branch that had purportedly 246 00:16:47.840 --> 00:16:54.240 coordinated the insurgency. Now, throughout the program, Phoenix neutralized air 247 00:16:54.360 --> 00:16:59.039 quotes eighty one thousand, seven hundred and forty people suspected 248 00:16:59.039 --> 00:17:02.759 of VC membership, of whom over twenty six thousand were killed. 249 00:17:03.399 --> 00:17:07.400 The rest surrendered or were captured. Of those killed, eighty 250 00:17:07.440 --> 00:17:11.359 seven percent were attributed to conventional military operations by South 251 00:17:11.440 --> 00:17:15.279 Vietnamese and American forces, while the remaining thirteen percent were 252 00:17:15.279 --> 00:17:20.039 attributed to the Phoenix Program operatives.
