Your brain has to have 19 00:01:06.599 --> 00:01:10.000 water to think. And in fact, most people don't realize this. 20 00:01:10.239 --> 00:01:14.040 The number one cause of fatigue. When you're fatigued, you 21 00:01:14.079 --> 00:01:18.359 need a drink of water. Dehydration is the number one 22 00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:21.159 cause of fatigue because you're not getting enough water, and 23 00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:25.319 your body runs on water and you become lethargic and 24 00:01:25.359 --> 00:01:28.719 you can't think clearly, and it shuts down. If you've 25 00:01:28.719 --> 00:01:32.079 ever had surgery, you know what I'm talking about when 26 00:01:32.120 --> 00:01:34.959 I tell you that the least fun part to me 27 00:01:35.760 --> 00:01:38.519 is after the surgery. You know, they put that tube 28 00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:41.400 down your throat while you're sleeping, and when you wake 29 00:01:41.480 --> 00:01:45.680 up from the anesthesia and your throat is sore and 30 00:01:45.719 --> 00:01:50.159 your mouth is parched and your lips are dry, and 31 00:01:50.239 --> 00:01:53.599 they won't give you anything to drink. They go, are you kidding me? 33 00:01:57.319 --> 00:02:02.000 I want a big gulp, you know, because when you're thirsty, 34 00:02:02.359 --> 00:02:06.280 you're thirsty. Now we come to the fifth word of 35 00:02:06.400 --> 00:02:11.280 Jesus on the cross. Now, the first four words were 36 00:02:11.599 --> 00:02:14.039 in the first three hours on the cross. He's now 37 00:02:14.199 --> 00:02:16.800 been on the cross for six hours. Jesus hung on 38 00:02:16.800 --> 00:02:19.280 the cross for six hours, which actually isn't long because 39 00:02:19.280 --> 00:02:23.000 sometimes crucifixion would take days before somebody would die. It's 40 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:29.039 a very foul form of torture. But Jesus gave up 41 00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:32.280 his body, gave up his life, and he's in the 42 00:02:32.319 --> 00:02:36.520 final moments and in the final seconds of his hanging 43 00:02:36.560 --> 00:02:40.479 on the cross, he makes three more statements, and this 44 00:02:40.560 --> 00:02:45.800 one I call the word of humanity. It's simply the 45 00:02:45.879 --> 00:02:49.560 fifth word is I'm thirsty. And Jesus says this after 46 00:02:49.599 --> 00:02:52.759 hanging on the cross for six hours. Now, Jesus said 47 00:02:53.039 --> 00:02:55.919 a lot of things in life that only God could say. 48 00:02:56.199 --> 00:02:58.800 And we couldn't say him. But this is. 49 00:02:58.759 --> 00:03:03.080 Something you say all the time. I'm thirsty. I'm thirsty. 50 00:03:03.080 --> 00:03:07.520 Everybody says that I'm thirsty. And so this is what 51 00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:11.039 I call the word of humanity because anybody could say 52 00:03:11.039 --> 00:03:13.800 this one. Not everybody could say, you know, you're gonna 53 00:03:13.800 --> 00:03:17.479 be today with me in paradise, but anybody could say 54 00:03:17.719 --> 00:03:21.039 I'm thirsty. And so this is actually the word of humanity. 55 00:03:21.080 --> 00:03:24.400 And actually, in the Greek and the original translation, it's 56 00:03:24.400 --> 00:03:28.120 only one word. Jesus is hanging on the cross here, it says, 63 00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:48.039 after this, we'll come back to that minute, after what 64 00:03:48.840 --> 00:03:55.439 After this, Jesus knew that everything had been completed, so 65 00:03:55.439 --> 00:04:01.639 so that the scriptures would come true, he said, I thirsty. 66 00:04:01.840 --> 00:04:04.759 Now there was a jar full of vinegar there at 67 00:04:04.759 --> 00:04:08.199 the foot of the cross, so the soldiers soaked a 68 00:04:08.240 --> 00:04:12.840 sponge in it, put the sponge on a branch of 69 00:04:12.879 --> 00:04:17.639 a hissup plant and lifted it to Jesus' mouth. Now 70 00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:20.680 here's an interesting thing about this. Here Jesus says at 71 00:04:20.720 --> 00:04:24.120 the end of six hours, he says, I'm thirsty. Earlier, 72 00:04:24.439 --> 00:04:29.360 actually earlier in the cross, the Roman soldiers had offered 73 00:04:29.399 --> 00:04:32.079 him something to drink and he turned it down. So 74 00:04:32.160 --> 00:04:35.639 what's going on here? What's going why is he doing? 75 00:04:35.920 --> 00:04:37.920 Let me show your verse on the screen. In Mark 76 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:40.759 fifteen twenty three, it says this. This is after they 77 00:04:40.879 --> 00:04:43.680 immediately put him out the cross. The soldiers tried to 78 00:04:43.720 --> 00:04:47.839 give Jesus wine mixed with Mrr to drink, but he 79 00:04:47.920 --> 00:04:51.720 refused it. This is six hours earlier he refused wine 80 00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:54.600 mixed with mr to drink. 81 00:04:55.360 --> 00:04:56.120 Now why did. 82 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:58.839 Jesus refuse it? Well, because what was in the drink? 83 00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:02.920 And it was that that spice called mr. Murr is 84 00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:10.079 a narcotic. Murr is a painkiller and remember when Jesus 85 00:05:10.879 --> 00:05:14.920 was born and the wise men came and they brought gold, 86 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:19.720 Frankenson's and muhr. Yeah, and each of those were predicting 87 00:05:20.199 --> 00:05:22.360 that he would be a king, and he would be 88 00:05:22.399 --> 00:05:25.360 a priest and he would die because murr was what. 89 00:05:25.319 --> 00:05:27.879 You gave to people as they were dying in pain. 90 00:05:29.079 --> 00:05:32.319 There was no advil, there was no narcotics, you know, 91 00:05:32.439 --> 00:05:36.079 no vicodin, no OxyContin or anything else, and so people 92 00:05:36.120 --> 00:05:39.160 would mix muhr, a narcotic with. 93 00:05:40.920 --> 00:05:43.560 Wine and give it to people who were in pain. 94 00:05:44.439 --> 00:05:47.839 Now, why in the world with the Roman executioners offer 95 00:05:47.920 --> 00:05:52.160 a drug to Jesus hanging on the cross, Well, it 96 00:05:52.279 --> 00:05:54.879 certainly wasn't out of humanitarian effort. They weren't trying to 97 00:05:54.920 --> 00:05:59.879 ease his pain. Here was the real reason. Crucifixion was excruciating, 98 00:06:01.199 --> 00:06:03.319 and it often went hours and hours and hours and 99 00:06:03.439 --> 00:06:05.800 often days, and they had to stay there until the 100 00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:09.800 guy died. And often the criminal who was being hung 101 00:06:09.839 --> 00:06:14.639 on the cross would scream for hours. They didn't want 102 00:06:14.680 --> 00:06:19.000 to hear the screams, and so they offer Jesus when 103 00:06:19.040 --> 00:06:22.079 they nail him to the cross, they offer him a drug. 104 00:06:22.680 --> 00:06:25.319 So he won't scream. It's not for his benefit. It's 105 00:06:25.319 --> 00:06:26.040 for their benefit. 106 00:06:26.439 --> 00:06:29.079 They just don't want to hear Jesus screaming for hours 107 00:06:29.160 --> 00:06:31.240 in the agony of the Cross. It was long and 108 00:06:31.319 --> 00:06:35.879 drawn out. Now, why did Jesus refuse it? He was not going to 111 00:06:43.120 --> 00:06:46.240 go into his dying for the world to drug. He 112 00:06:46.360 --> 00:06:48.600 was going to go into it with his full faculties. 113 00:06:48.879 --> 00:06:52.879 He was gonna feel every ounce of physical and emotional pain. 114 00:06:53.519 --> 00:06:55.480 So he refuses a. 115 00:06:55.519 --> 00:06:59.120 Drink that is drugged at the beginning, But now at 116 00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:02.600 the end, he's in a final moments. Now he says, 117 00:07:03.240 --> 00:07:06.680 I'm thirsty. It says now, notice on your outline, it says, 118 00:07:06.720 --> 00:07:10.279 after this circle, after this, after what well, after he 119 00:07:10.279 --> 00:07:13.639 had finished paying for our sins, after the needs of 120 00:07:13.680 --> 00:07:18.160 all humanity had been met, after God's justice had been satisfied, 121 00:07:18.720 --> 00:07:22.759 after the scripture had been fulfilled. He's paid for the 122 00:07:22.800 --> 00:07:26.759 sins of mankind now and he's been separated from God. Remember, 123 00:07:26.839 --> 00:07:28.560 my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 124 00:07:28.600 --> 00:07:31.240 We looked at that last week. You know. 125 00:07:31.759 --> 00:07:36.240 One of the Christian creeds of classic Christianity says he died, 126 00:07:36.600 --> 00:07:38.800 was buried in the ground, went to Hell, and then 127 00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:41.959 rose again. Well, there's not really anything in scripture that 128 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:43.480 talks about Jesus going to Hell. 129 00:07:43.720 --> 00:07:44.720 He didn't need to go to Hell. 130 00:07:44.759 --> 00:07:47.560 He went through Hell on the cross, and he experienced 131 00:07:47.560 --> 00:07:50.480 all the judgment and all the separation from God on 132 00:07:50.519 --> 00:07:52.600 the cross, not needing to go to Hell because he 133 00:07:52.639 --> 00:07:53.439 experienced it there. 134 00:07:53.480 --> 00:07:54.600 Why have you forsaken me? 135 00:07:55.439 --> 00:07:58.279 When he cries out, I thirst, that's the word of 136 00:07:58.319 --> 00:08:02.839 somebody who's gone through hell. You see, the Bible says 137 00:08:02.839 --> 00:08:03.600 that in heaven. 138 00:08:03.399 --> 00:08:04.000 There's a river. 139 00:08:04.519 --> 00:08:06.319 The Bible says there's a river in heaven, but there's 140 00:08:06.319 --> 00:08:09.959 no water in hell. There's no water in hell. And 141 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:12.800 he's been going through how hell for these many many hours, 142 00:08:13.319 --> 00:08:16.600 and he now knows everything has been completed, and so 143 00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:20.279 he says the word of humanity, I thirst. Now what 144 00:08:20.319 --> 00:08:22.399 I want to do this weekend is quickly do three things. 145 00:08:22.959 --> 00:08:26.480 What does this mean about Jesus? What does this mean 146 00:08:26.560 --> 00:08:29.439 about the people around you? And what does it mean 147 00:08:29.600 --> 00:08:33.600 to you? What does it mean about Jesus saying I thirst? 148 00:08:34.039 --> 00:08:36.679 What does it mean about the people around you who 149 00:08:36.720 --> 00:08:40.559 are thirsty spiritually? And what does it tell you about 150 00:08:40.600 --> 00:08:45.039 your own spiritual thirst and your hunger for fulfillment and 151 00:08:45.159 --> 00:08:50.320 unsatisfaction and cravings in your own life. Let's look at 152 00:08:50.320 --> 00:08:52.519 these three things. First, what do we learn from this 153 00:08:52.600 --> 00:08:54.720 statement when Jesus that I thirst? What do we learned 154 00:08:54.720 --> 00:08:59.120 about Jesus? Well, the thirst of Jesus shows us three things. 155 00:08:59.120 --> 00:08:59.840 Write these down. 156 00:09:00.919 --> 00:09:03.879 You see, by the way, this is the only statement 157 00:09:04.240 --> 00:09:05.879 Jesus makes about his pain. 158 00:09:06.440 --> 00:09:12.240 Now think about this. Jesus was beaten, he was tortured. 159 00:09:13.200 --> 00:09:15.480 They took made a crown of thorns and crushed it 160 00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:18.120 into his skull, and those thorns are going into his head. 161 00:09:18.720 --> 00:09:21.519 They spit on him. The Bible says, they plucked his beard. 162 00:09:21.840 --> 00:09:24.159 The Bible says he was scourged, which means you get 163 00:09:24.200 --> 00:09:26.720 whipped forty times with the cat of nine tails. That's 164 00:09:26.759 --> 00:09:30.399 three hundred and sixty lacerations on your back before you 165 00:09:30.480 --> 00:09:33.480 even go to the cross. His back is a bloody 166 00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:35.559 pulp even before he hadn't even gone the cross. Yet, 167 00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:40.799 he's been beaten, he's been gone twelve hours without water, 168 00:09:40.840 --> 00:09:44.200 he's dehydrated, he's had a loss of blood. He hadn't 169 00:09:44.200 --> 00:09:48.639 been asleep in twenty four hours. And so there's a 170 00:09:49.039 --> 00:09:53.159 why does he say I thirst, Well, there's a couple reasons. 171 00:09:53.159 --> 00:09:56.320 There's a practical reason, and that is he wanted to 172 00:09:56.360 --> 00:10:00.399 have enough energy to say the final words coming up 173 00:10:00.440 --> 00:10:02.799 in the next two weeks. He wanted to be able 174 00:10:02.799 --> 00:10:04.720 to shout out his last two words. But there's also 175 00:10:05.039 --> 00:10:08.799 a theological reason, and there's a prophetic reason, and there's 176 00:10:08.799 --> 00:10:09.600 a personal reason. 177 00:10:09.639 --> 00:10:10.960 Here are the three reasons. Number one. 178 00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:13.919 First thing happens when Jesus says I thirst is it 179 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:18.799 showed Jesus was truly human. It showed that Jesus was 180 00:10:18.840 --> 00:10:23.960 truly human. Now some people think, actually that Jesus was 181 00:10:24.039 --> 00:10:27.919 not really human. He was just God with human skin on. 182 00:10:28.200 --> 00:10:31.080 But he wasn't really fully human. Some people think he 183 00:10:31.200 --> 00:10:33.799 was like half human and half God. No, he was 184 00:10:33.879 --> 00:10:36.679 not half human and half God. He was one hundred 185 00:10:36.720 --> 00:10:42.279 percent human and one hundred percent God at the same time, 186 00:10:43.559 --> 00:10:46.000 and so he fully experienced the pain. The Bible says 187 00:10:46.039 --> 00:10:49.080 this in Philippians chapter two. Jesus gave up his place 188 00:10:49.120 --> 00:10:51.600 with God and he made himself nothing. 189 00:10:52.519 --> 00:10:54.960 He was born to be a man, and he became 190 00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:55.600 a servant. 191 00:10:56.120 --> 00:10:58.519 And when he was living as a man, he humbled 192 00:10:58.600 --> 00:11:02.639 himself and was full obedient to God, even when that 193 00:11:02.879 --> 00:11:08.320 caused his death on the cross. Now, this word i 194 00:11:08.440 --> 00:11:12.639 thirst counters a false belief. In ancient times, it was 195 00:11:12.679 --> 00:11:17.639 called docetism, and dosetism was the idea that jesus body 196 00:11:17.720 --> 00:11:19.879 was just an illusion that it. 197 00:11:19.840 --> 00:11:22.200 Was, that he wasn't really a man. 198 00:11:22.720 --> 00:11:25.399 And the doset comes from the Greek word which means 199 00:11:25.399 --> 00:11:28.360 to seem. He appeared to be human being, but he 200 00:11:28.440 --> 00:11:32.879 wasn't really a human being because God would never become 201 00:11:33.240 --> 00:11:37.919 a man. And that idea was called docetism. Well, this 202 00:11:38.039 --> 00:11:41.399 is obviously disproving because Jesus was a man with real thirst, 203 00:11:41.840 --> 00:11:47.240 real desires. Now today nobody even hears about dosetism. But 204 00:11:47.279 --> 00:11:50.799 there's another belief that believes that Jesus, that God would never. 205 00:11:50.720 --> 00:11:54.840 Become a man. It's called Islam. Anybody heard of that one? 206 00:11:55.679 --> 00:12:00.720 Yeah, Islam teaches the same truth as dosetism. In fact, 207 00:12:00.919 --> 00:12:03.759 let me read it to you from the Koran quote 208 00:12:03.919 --> 00:12:06.480 Suruh for one fifty seven. 209 00:12:06.840 --> 00:12:08.759 Quote. This is from the Koran. 210 00:12:09.360 --> 00:12:12.320 They say, indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the 211 00:12:12.360 --> 00:12:15.080 son of Mary, the messenger of Allah. But they did 212 00:12:15.080 --> 00:12:18.000 not kill him, nor did they crucify him. But it 213 00:12:18.120 --> 00:12:21.159 was an another person who was made to resemble him 214 00:12:21.240 --> 00:12:25.039 to them. And indeed those who differ over it are 215 00:12:25.039 --> 00:12:27.559 in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it 216 00:12:27.639 --> 00:12:30.679 except the following assumption. And they did not kill him, 217 00:12:30.720 --> 00:12:35.200 that's for certain. That's what the Koran says. Okay, the 218 00:12:35.279 --> 00:12:39.559 Koran does. Koran believes that Jesus existed, and they believe 219 00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:41.879 he was a prophet. But they do not believe that 220 00:12:41.919 --> 00:12:44.519 God would ever become a human being, and God would 221 00:12:44.639 --> 00:12:48.080 never die in across. So they say that when the 222 00:12:48.120 --> 00:12:53.000 cross happened, that they switched bodies and somebody, a fake, 223 00:12:53.200 --> 00:12:57.399 took Jesus place. That's what Islam believes. Two thousand years ago. 224 00:12:57.679 --> 00:13:01.559 It was called docetism. Today it's one of the beliefs 225 00:13:01.559 --> 00:13:05.440 of Islam. But Jesus clearly was human being. He says, 226 00:13:05.720 --> 00:13:09.440 I thirst, I thirst. If he wasn't fully man, he 227 00:13:09.480 --> 00:13:11.879 couldn't have died. If he wasn't fully man, he couldn't 228 00:13:11.879 --> 00:13:15.399 have gotten thirsty. He say, well, God can't die. Well, 229 00:13:15.480 --> 00:13:19.399 God can't die, but a human being can die. And 230 00:13:19.440 --> 00:13:21.679 it's just as what I'm trying to teach you is this, 231 00:13:21.840 --> 00:13:25.039 It's just as wrong to deny Jesus humanity as it 232 00:13:25.080 --> 00:13:26.840 is to deny Jesus divinity. 233 00:13:26.840 --> 00:13:27.600 Does that make sense. 234 00:13:28.399 --> 00:13:31.440 Jesus was both fully God and he was fully man 235 00:13:31.559 --> 00:13:34.039 at the same time. What's that all about? 242 00:13:58.440 --> 00:14:01.840 In the Old Testament, fors of years, God had been 243 00:14:01.879 --> 00:14:05.600 telling humanity, I'm going to send a savior. I'm going 244 00:14:05.639 --> 00:14:09.440 to send a Messiah. I'm going to send the anointed one. 245 00:14:09.639 --> 00:14:13.200 I'm going to send the savior of the world. And 246 00:14:13.480 --> 00:14:15.519 in those thousands of years, and they're all in the 247 00:14:15.559 --> 00:14:19.320 Old Testament, there are over three hundred and eighty predictions 248 00:14:19.720 --> 00:14:23.000 about what the Messiah would be, and what he would do, 249 00:14:23.320 --> 00:14:25.720 where he'd be born, and all these different things. Three 250 00:14:25.759 --> 00:14:29.639 hundred and eighty predictions. And this was so people would 251 00:14:29.679 --> 00:14:33.919 know this is the guy, because there were lots of 252 00:14:33.919 --> 00:14:36.000 people who claimed to be the son of God. Well, there 254 00:14:38.000 --> 00:14:40.399 were three hundred and eighty prophecies, and you had to 255 00:14:40.440 --> 00:14:43.440 fulfill every one of them. For instance, you know that 256 00:14:43.879 --> 00:14:46.840 the Bible says he would be born in Bethlehem. It's 257 00:14:46.919 --> 00:14:50.080 kind of hard to pick your birthplace, Okay, he had 258 00:14:50.120 --> 00:14:50.960 no control over that. 259 00:14:51.759 --> 00:14:52.879 They said he would. 260 00:14:52.720 --> 00:14:55.399 Be taken to Egypt as a young baby, and he was. 261 00:14:55.879 --> 00:14:58.320 They said that he will be raised in Nazareth. They said, 262 00:14:58.799 --> 00:15:02.679 the prophecy said he'll do miracles, he'll raise the dead. 263 00:15:02.919 --> 00:15:05.279 And there were prophecies in the Old Testament that say 264 00:15:05.440 --> 00:15:10.200 he'll be betrayed by a friend, he'll be falsely accused, 265 00:15:10.840 --> 00:15:14.679 but he'll be innocent.
