We began 42 00:02:03.159 --> 00:02:06.599 reviewing not only our curriculum but the materials in our 43 00:02:06.599 --> 00:02:11.319 school libraries last spring, and it became very obvious to 44 00:02:11.400 --> 00:02:14.879 us that over the years we've collected some materials in 45 00:02:14.919 --> 00:02:19.759 our libraries that just were inappropriate. We began recognizing that 46 00:02:19.800 --> 00:02:22.960 there were parents who wanted a little more control over 47 00:02:23.039 --> 00:02:27.800 what parents what they prefer their children check out. So 48 00:02:28.159 --> 00:02:31.159 we started reviewing our entire collection. We have over fifty 49 00:02:31.199 --> 00:02:36.240 thousand books in our libraries. We started identifying books that 50 00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:39.599 had sensitive topics, books that might have graphic violence, books 51 00:02:39.639 --> 00:02:44.680 that might have religious connotations, books that might have sexual content, 52 00:02:44.800 --> 00:02:48.599 successive racism, things like that that some parents might be 53 00:02:48.639 --> 00:02:51.879 fine with their children reading, others may not, And so 54 00:02:51.960 --> 00:02:55.199 we labeled books with sensitive content. A lot of parents 55 00:02:55.240 --> 00:02:57.759 who wanted their children not to access those books to 56 00:02:57.800 --> 00:03:00.520 opt them out. But in the process of doing so, 57 00:03:00.599 --> 00:03:03.400 we identified nineteen books and that's what we're here to 58 00:03:03.479 --> 00:03:08.800 talk about today, nineteen books that had excessive age and 59 00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:13.919 appropriate material that in the process, we displayed for twenty 60 00:03:13.960 --> 00:03:18.039 five days in our community for our parents and our 61 00:03:18.080 --> 00:03:20.719 community members to come in and take a look at 62 00:03:21.039 --> 00:03:23.560 and give the board some guidance as to what they 63 00:03:23.599 --> 00:03:26.879 thought these books, what we should do with these books, 64 00:03:26.879 --> 00:03:30.439 and overwhelmingly, our community said, these books are inappropriate and 65 00:03:30.520 --> 00:03:33.759 don't belong in the library. And so we made the 66 00:03:33.800 --> 00:03:37.080 decision based on the inappropriate content of these books to 67 00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:40.520 remove them, only to find four months later that we 68 00:03:40.520 --> 00:03:45.039 were being sued by the ACLU to force us to 69 00:03:45.080 --> 00:03:48.479 put these books back. A week and a half ago, 70 00:03:49.439 --> 00:03:53.199 we were given an order a preliminary in junction by 71 00:03:53.240 --> 00:03:58.879 a Denver judge to replace these books in our library. Luckily, 72 00:03:59.400 --> 00:04:02.599 after appealing and asking for a stay of that motion 73 00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:06.319 and then appealing to the Tenth Circuit, the local judge 74 00:04:06.360 --> 00:04:11.039 did stay her motion and asked for the plaintiffs to 75 00:04:11.479 --> 00:04:14.840 respond to our motion for stay and appeal. So we 76 00:04:14.919 --> 00:04:18.680 are currently in that phase where our motion has been 77 00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:23.720 stayed and we await her ruling this week.
