Unlike Los Angeles, Ventura County 91 00:05:31.319 --> 00:05:36.360 is known for low crime rates for affluent citizens, for 92 00:05:36.439 --> 00:05:40.040 people who essentially want to get away from the crime 93 00:05:40.160 --> 00:05:45.040 of the larger cities and the bigger metropolitan areas. And especially in this community. 108 00:06:39.360 --> 00:06:43.000 Brock and Divini Houstad were a very affluent couple. They 109 00:06:43.079 --> 00:06:45.600 lived in a community at the time of their murders 110 00:06:45.639 --> 00:06:49.160 called Faria, which is just a few miles up the 111 00:06:49.199 --> 00:06:53.560 coast from the city of Ventura. Faria is an extremely 112 00:06:53.720 --> 00:06:59.839 upscale community. Only a few people live there in several 113 00:07:00.040 --> 00:07:05.560 oceanfront homes. Brock Housteed was born in Hidden Hills, which 114 00:07:05.600 --> 00:07:09.040 is a community in Los Angeles County that is one 115 00:07:09.079 --> 00:07:12.240 of the most affluent in the entire country. As I 116 00:07:12.279 --> 00:07:15.360 point out in the book Bloomberg Business listed in two 117 00:07:15.399 --> 00:07:18.160 thousand and nine, the year of this crime, listed Hidden 118 00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:20.879 Hills as being one of the wealthiest towns in America. 119 00:07:22.439 --> 00:07:26.160 So Brock Housted grew up in relative affluence. When he 120 00:07:26.199 --> 00:07:28.800 was a child, his family moved to a city called 121 00:07:28.879 --> 00:07:32.800 Moore Park, which is in Ventura County, and for high 122 00:07:32.839 --> 00:07:36.439 school he attended a very exclusive private school in Ohi 123 00:07:36.759 --> 00:07:42.839 called Villanova Preparatory Academy. After high school, Brock's brother Scott, 124 00:07:42.920 --> 00:07:45.240 went to work at a local bank, and while he 125 00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:48.279 was working at the bank, he met a young woman 126 00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:52.199 who was one of his coworkers named Divina Deboni. She 127 00:07:52.480 --> 00:07:58.480 was a tall, statuesque blonde absolutely gorgeous. In fact, when 128 00:07:58.519 --> 00:08:01.560 she was nineteen years old, she had won the Miss 129 00:08:01.560 --> 00:08:04.839 Oxnard pageant, and then she'd gone on to compete in 130 00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:07.600 the Miss California pageant, which I'm sure most of your 131 00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:11.519 audience members know is the last step before one enters 132 00:08:11.560 --> 00:08:16.519 the Miss America pageant. So Divina de Boni was absolutely gorgeous, 133 00:08:16.839 --> 00:08:21.120 and at least it's my understanding that when Scott Husted 134 00:08:21.240 --> 00:08:23.040 first met her, he thought that she might be a 135 00:08:23.040 --> 00:08:27.160 good match for his younger brother Brock. So, to make 136 00:08:27.199 --> 00:08:30.720 a long story short, in nineteen ninety Brock and Divina 137 00:08:30.759 --> 00:08:34.720 Houstead were introduced to one another, and as the story goes, 138 00:08:34.879 --> 00:08:38.960 they were immediate There were immediate sparks between them. There are mooring areas, there are boat docks 144 00:08:57.919 --> 00:09:01.799 within the neighborhood, and then after their children were born, 145 00:09:02.080 --> 00:09:05.320 they moved up the coast to the Faria home at 146 00:09:05.320 --> 00:09:10.200 the at the time of the crimes. Brock Housteed operated 147 00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:15.720 a business called Cotur Concepts. He provided custom metal work 148 00:09:15.919 --> 00:09:19.879 for high end clients. Some of his celebrity clients here 149 00:09:19.879 --> 00:09:24.519 in this region included Suzanne Summers, Mel Gibson, Oprah Winfrey, 150 00:09:24.559 --> 00:09:27.799 who owns a large spread up in the Montecito area 151 00:09:27.799 --> 00:09:30.399 in Santa Barbara County. He had done work for all 152 00:09:30.440 --> 00:09:34.879 of them. Brockhusted's work his metal work had appeared in magazines. 153 00:09:35.840 --> 00:09:40.320 And at the same time Brock Houstead was getting his 154 00:09:41.279 --> 00:09:45.679 metal business up and running, Divina was establishing herself as 155 00:09:45.720 --> 00:09:49.399 a major player in the local charity world of Ventura County. 156 00:09:50.039 --> 00:09:52.799 She was the president of the national charity Junior League 157 00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:56.639 of Ventura. In fact, 159 00:10:00.919 --> 00:10:04.200 one week before the tragic crimes that I detail in 160 00:10:04.279 --> 00:10:08.320 the book, she had given a check for almost eighty 161 00:10:08.320 --> 00:10:12.279 five thousand dollars to the local hospital. So both brock 162 00:10:12.279 --> 00:10:16.759 and Divini Houstad were enormously active people. They were involved 163 00:10:16.759 --> 00:10:19.519 in their community, They were deeply involved in the lives 164 00:10:19.519 --> 00:10:24.279 of their children, Brocky and Isabella, and from all outward 165 00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:28.039 appearances they had almost the perfect life, living in their beautiful, 166 00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:31.200 multimillion dollar oceanfront home in Pharrea. 167 00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:36.000 Now tell us a little bit about the ages. Their mother was actively 183 00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:38.720 involved at their school where she was involved in volunteer work, 184 00:11:39.480 --> 00:11:44.679 and from all accounts, they were completely normal, well adjusted 185 00:11:44.840 --> 00:11:49.279 children who came from a very large Ventura County background. 186 00:11:49.879 --> 00:11:51.840 Like I pointed out before both of their parents had 187 00:11:51.840 --> 00:11:55.559 grown up in Ventura County, so they had a large 188 00:11:55.600 --> 00:11:58.519 network of family members who lived nearby, and they were 189 00:11:58.919 --> 00:12:02.720 very well supported for after the tragedy occurred. 190 00:12:05.759 --> 00:12:09.759 Now, this idyllic life is obviously shattered. May twentieth, two 191 00:12:09.799 --> 00:12:14.600 thousand and nine. But you did mentioned you talk about 192 00:12:14.679 --> 00:12:20.399 their their comfort, their their affluence, and and I guess 193 00:12:20.440 --> 00:12:24.440 their relative security living in this gated community.
