It says that chapter one, God arranged a great wind, 42 00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:27.759 and then it says that the wind created a great storm, and then it 43 00:03:27.800 --> 00:03:31.719 says that the sailors felt great fear because the boat was breaking up. Then 44 00:03:31.800 --> 00:03:37.680 God arranged a great fish, and then it says Jonah got a great second 45 00:03:37.800 --> 00:03:42.159 chance. And then none of us showed great repentance that city, and as 46 00:03:42.159 --> 00:03:45.680 a result, the city had a great revival. A lot of great things 47 00:03:45.800 --> 00:03:49.599 happen, but also a lot of small things. I want you to write 48 00:03:49.639 --> 00:03:53.120 this down. Write this down somewhere on your outline. God uses both great 49 00:03:53.360 --> 00:04:01.159 and small things to direct me. God uses both great and small things to 50 00:04:01.199 --> 00:04:08.080 direct me great circumstances. Big circumstances have swallow me up. Disappointments are his appointments. Even when I can't 62 00:05:05.319 --> 00:05:15.199 feel it, you're working. That's that's an affirmation of faith. So God 63 00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:19.879 creates this short lived plant to provide shade for Jonah, and then he allows 64 00:05:19.920 --> 00:05:26.519 it to die the next morning as an object lesson for Jonah. Verse nine. 65 00:05:26.759 --> 00:05:32.160 Then God asked Jonah again, what right do you have to be angry 66 00:05:32.319 --> 00:05:39.519 that the shade plant withered and died. You're really good at killing plants. 85 00:07:13.600 --> 00:07:15.439 Okay, you don't have a green thumb. You got I don't know, 86 00:07:15.680 --> 00:07:20.240 some other kind of thumb. But the bottom line is he's saying, 87 00:07:20.319 --> 00:07:26.399 if you're gonna get distressed about something in life, well at least get distressed 88 00:07:26.399 --> 00:07:30.439 about something that matters that's gonna last. You're all worried about a plant that 89 00:07:30.439 --> 00:07:33.759 grew up one day and then I let it die the next to teach you 90 00:07:34.519 --> 00:07:38.879 the brevity of life, to teach you how most of the stuff you're worried 91 00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:46.120 about isn't even gonna matter a year from today. It's just temporary. In 92 00:07:46.199 --> 00:07:49.439 verse ten and eleven, it says, then the Lord said, Jonah, 93 00:07:49.639 --> 00:07:56.600 you're more concerned about a plant that died, even though you didn't plant it, 94 00:07:56.839 --> 00:07:59.680 you didn't water it, you didn't make it grow. In other words, 95 00:07:59.680 --> 00:08:05.439 I did that. And plants are short lived. They spree up quickly 96 00:08:05.480 --> 00:08:09.399 and they die. But Ninevah, that city over there, the one that 97 00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:13.959 you wanted destroyed has more than one hundred and twenty thousand people who don't know 98 00:08:13.079 --> 00:08:16.639 their right hand from their left. I'll explain that in a minute, not 99 00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:24.480 to mention all the animals. Shouldn't I be concerned about that great city now? 100 00:08:24.600 --> 00:08:28.879 Now, Bible scholars debate what is meant by one hundred and twenty thousand 101 00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:33.000 people that know their left hand from their right hand. Some scholars think it 102 00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:35.440 means children, one hundred and twenty thousand kids. Now, I'm not gonna make a 112 00:09:20.799 --> 00:09:26.200 big point here. But God wants us to care about cities. He says, 113 00:09:26.360 --> 00:09:31.639 should I not care about that great city? If God cares about cities, 114 00:09:31.679 --> 00:09:37.240 we should too. What cities should you care about? Well, obviously 115 00:09:37.279 --> 00:09:41.559 the one you live in. But God says you should care about all cities. 116 00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:43.759 Why because they're filled with people that God created and made and loved. 117 00:09:46.039 --> 00:09:48.600 The future of the world is urbanization.
