Well, I went through 24 00:01:57.560 --> 00:02:00.120 those over one hundred verses in the New Testament this week, and I made 25 00:02:00.159 --> 00:02:02.719 a list of all things were supposed to warn people about. We don't have 26 00:02:02.760 --> 00:02:07.480 time for that, but let me just summarize it in two categories. Write 27 00:02:07.480 --> 00:02:10.199 these down. When am I supposed to warn people that I love? Now, just in case you think 34 00:02:42.520 --> 00:02:45.919 I'm making too big a deal about this, let me take you to another 35 00:02:45.960 --> 00:02:51.840 guy, another prophet named named Ezekiel, not the football player. But here's 36 00:02:51.840 --> 00:02:57.919 what the Bible says about Ezekiel Ezekiel thirty three one to nine. The Lord 37 00:02:57.919 --> 00:03:04.280 said to Ezekiel, Ezekiel, warn your people by saying this, Someday, 38 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:09.240 I the Lord may send an enemy to invade your country. And I suppose 39 00:03:09.280 --> 00:03:15.479 you, and suppose you people choose someone to stand watch and sound and warning 40 00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:20.439 when the enemy is seeing combing. Okay, Now, if you ignore the 41 00:03:20.479 --> 00:03:25.039 warning and you're killed in battle, it'll be your own fault because you could 42 00:03:25.080 --> 00:03:29.479 have escaped if you just paid attention, in other words, to the warning. 43 00:03:30.439 --> 00:03:38.319 But suppose the person given the mission of watching and warning fails to sound 44 00:03:38.680 --> 00:03:43.240 the warning signal. In that case, he says, then I the Lord 45 00:03:43.479 --> 00:03:50.319 will hold that person responsible for the death of those people. Now, Ezekiel, 46 00:03:50.919 --> 00:03:55.639 I have appointed you to stand and warn, to stand watch and warn 47 00:03:55.919 --> 00:04:00.840 the people of your nation. So listen to what I say, and then 48 00:04:00.919 --> 00:04:05.400 warn them for me. And here's what God says. And this is expect God to use you is the is the 97 00:08:20.079 --> 00:08:24.600 fifth thing. This is why Jonah was in such a sour mood because he 98 00:08:24.720 --> 00:08:28.519 knew that God was going to use him and he didn't want to be used. 99 00:08:30.439 --> 00:08:33.159 He's going I don't want these people to have a spiritual revival. They're my enemy. Now, what happens next 108 00:09:11.480 --> 00:09:18.440 is flat out miracle because the city responds to Jonahs' seven word sermon. That's 109 00:09:18.480 --> 00:09:24.919 all it is, seven words sermon. In forty days, nineveh will be 110 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:31.840 destroyed. Wow, what a sermon, and is the biggest spiritual revival in 111 00:09:31.919 --> 00:09:37.320 history. The largest city in the world turns to God. Look up here 112 00:09:37.320 --> 00:09:43.840 on the screen. Here's what it says. The Ninevites believed God, and 113 00:09:43.879 --> 00:09:48.159 they humble themselves, putting on sackcloth. What cyclone? This cloth? They 114 00:09:48.200 --> 00:09:52.240 make sacks out of burlap. It's burlap. They put on sackcloth from the 115 00:09:52.279 --> 00:09:56.519 greatest to the least as a symbol of their humility. And when the news 116 00:09:56.559 --> 00:10:01.320 reached the King of Nineveh, this is the ahead of the Assyrian empire. 117 00:10:01.879 --> 00:10:07.279 He rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with 118 00:10:07.480 --> 00:10:15.360 burlap sackcloth, and even the king sat down in the dust. Then the 119 00:10:15.799 --> 00:10:18.519 king proclaimed to public fast, and he says, no human or animals to 120 00:10:18.559 --> 00:10:22.039 eat or drink anything. Let each of us and even our animals be covered 121 00:10:22.440 --> 00:10:30.679 with sackcloth. Then let us all pray urgently to God, and let us 122 00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:35.480 turn from our evil ways, and let us stop all our violence. Here's what they did. Number one, they humble themselves. 131 00:11:20.879 --> 00:11:24.480 Number two they fasted, Okay, they proclaimed a public fast. Number 132 00:11:24.519 --> 00:11:31.200 three they prayed urgently. Okay, they prayed urgently. Okay. Number four 133 00:11:31.679 --> 00:11:37.559 they turned from evil and the bad things they were doing. And number five 134 00:11:37.080 --> 00:11:41.360 they said, let's stop all violence. Would that change our society if we 135 00:11:41.399 --> 00:11:54.360 did those things? Hello? I mean, just imagine for fifty years Ninevah 136 00:11:54.360 --> 00:11:58.840 has been the world's largest city. They're so proud. Then why in the 137 00:11:58.879 --> 00:12:05.200 world did they respond to a seven words sermon and everybody turns to God instantly? 138 00:12:07.200 --> 00:12:13.840 That's an incredible miracle. Why were they so receptive even though Jonah's message 139 00:12:13.879 --> 00:12:20.320 was unloving and short. Because God had prepared their heart? And how had 140 00:12:20.360 --> 00:12:26.519 God prepared their heart the way He prepares every heart? Through pain? Through 141 00:12:26.519 --> 00:12:31.120 pain? Now you wouldn't know this, but the largest city in the world 142 00:12:31.120 --> 00:12:37.320 turns to God because they had had pain in just a few years before that. 143 00:12:39.200 --> 00:12:43.399 You have to know a little bit about archaeology and ancient history to know 144 00:12:43.480 --> 00:12:46.360 this. So let me read this to you. You see, when this 145 00:12:46.480 --> 00:12:52.159 happens, when Jonah's going there, the Syrian Empire had been dominant for hundreds 146 00:12:52.200 --> 00:12:54.960 and hundreds of years. It's like the British Empire, the Roman Empire, 147 00:12:56.039 --> 00:13:01.440 the American Empire. Okay, but now they're in decline and the empires in 148 00:13:01.440 --> 00:13:05.440 decline, and they're losing battles against the Meads and the Persians, which is 149 00:13:05.480 --> 00:13:09.879 Iraq and Iran, and they had domestic riots inside the city going on at 150 00:13:09.879 --> 00:13:15.240 this time. In seven sixty five BC, they had a seven year famine. 151 00:13:15.399 --> 00:13:18.240 This is right when Jonah is in the time. Seven sixty five that 152 00:13:18.440 --> 00:13:20.960 began a seven year famine. Seven sixty three BC, it was a total 153 00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:24.960 eclipse of the sun. We actually even know it was on June fifteenth, 154 00:13:24.480 --> 00:13:31.799 and that scared the entire ancient world because that was like a prophecy of like 155 00:13:31.240 --> 00:13:37.720 doom is coming. In seven sixty two, Nineveh had a massive earthquake. 156 00:13:37.799 --> 00:13:41.399 It sits on a fault and they had a massive earthquake in the city. 157 00:13:41.840 --> 00:13:45.320 In seven sixty one, the Tigris River, which is right by Nanava, 158 00:13:45.600 --> 00:13:50.679 flooded the city. So they've had total eclipse, floods, enemies, riots, 159 00:13:52.320 --> 00:13:58.360 fires, earthquakes. These disasters happened right before Jonah has arrived. God 160 00:13:58.679 --> 00:14:05.919 is for paring their hearts, and Jonah three to ten says this, when 161 00:14:05.960 --> 00:14:11.600 God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he 162 00:14:11.639 --> 00:14:16.799 had compassion. Uh, that's what he wanted to do, and he did 163 00:14:16.879 --> 00:14:24.799 not do what he had warned he would do. Because of this revival, 164 00:14:26.200 --> 00:14:33.240 the Assyrian Empire's demise, the destruction of the Syrian Empire was postponed one hundred 165 00:14:33.279 --> 00:14:39.759 years, and Ninevah was not destroyed until about six twelve AD by the Means 166 00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:43.159 and the Persians. It went for another hundred years. Does this remind you 167 00:14:43.279 --> 00:14:48.399 of a culture that's been dominant seems to be decaying and if they had a 168 00:14:48.440 --> 00:14:54.159 revival, God might give them another one hundred years. Nineva finally fell in 169 00:14:54.200 --> 00:15:00.279 six twelve eighty. This revival where an entire city comes to God, was 170 00:15:00.399 --> 00:15:03.240 so famous in the ancient world. I mean, everybody knew this. This 171 00:15:03.320 --> 00:15:07.679 is not just in the Bible. Everybody knew this story of Jonah and ninev 172 00:15:09.279 --> 00:15:15.759 In fact, twelve hundred years later, Mohammed tells the story of Jonah and 173 00:15:15.840 --> 00:15:20.679 the revival in Nineveh and writes it in the Koran, the Muslim book. 174 00:15:20.600 --> 00:15:26.000 He didn't know that the story of Jonah and the fish and the revival in 175 00:15:26.039 --> 00:15:31.039 Nineva. It's not just in the Bible, it's in the Koran, because 176 00:15:31.080 --> 00:15:35.519 everybody in the ancient world knew this for hundreds and hundreds of years.
