Now, 15 00:02:25.080 --> 00:02:34.240 there is no getting around the fact that antibiotic drugs can save lives and have 16 00:02:35.360 --> 00:02:40.439 since they came out I think the late forties or fifties. On a regular 17 00:02:40.479 --> 00:02:46.120 basis, it's a miracle, there's no question about it. But when you 18 00:02:46.240 --> 00:02:53.240 overuse them, or certain strains of antibiotics are given to people, it can 19 00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:57.560 create a problem. There is not a single drug that doesn't have potential adverse 20 00:02:57.599 --> 00:03:07.800 side effect possibilities. The average pharmaceutical drug has the potential to generate seventy different 21 00:03:07.960 --> 00:03:14.039 adverse side effects, and antibiotics are no different. This particular class I want 22 00:03:14.039 --> 00:03:20.159 to talk about today, excuse me, is called floral quinn alone antibiotics, 23 00:03:20.199 --> 00:03:23.800 and they go under the names. You may recognize these because maybe you've taken 24 00:03:23.879 --> 00:03:31.120 one of these drugs. One of these antibiotics cipro, levi quinn, Avalochs, 25 00:03:31.520 --> 00:03:37.080 bex della, or factive, but the more popular ones are cipro and 26 00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:43.719 levi quin. They've been linked to serious heart issues that according to a boxed 27 00:03:43.800 --> 00:03:49.280 warning issued by the Food and Drug Administration. The box warnings are placed on 28 00:03:49.360 --> 00:03:57.319 prescription drug labels to inform buyers about serious or life threatening risks. Now, 29 00:03:57.360 --> 00:04:01.680 I have talked about cipro and this class of antibiotics in the past, related 30 00:04:01.719 --> 00:04:06.840 to a bunch of other adverse side effects like rupturing one's achilles tendon while being 31 00:04:06.840 --> 00:04:13.280 on these drugs. Now. The FDA first added a boxed warning to this 32 00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:15.839 class of drug, cipro leviquent and all the rest of them back in two 33 00:04:15.879 --> 00:04:19.639 thousand and eight because of the increased risk of this problem that I just mentioned, 34 00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:28.360 tendonitis or the Achilles tendon ruptures which are being reported with people on this 35 00:04:28.560 --> 00:04:33.199 class of antibiotic. The FDA included an additional warning back in twenty eleven for 36 00:04:33.240 --> 00:04:42.639 people diagnosed with myasthemia gravis, and in January twenty twenty two, little over 37 00:04:42.680 --> 00:04:48.639 a year ago, the FDA announced that this class of antibiotics, floral quinolones, 38 00:04:48.920 --> 00:04:54.160 cipro leviquent and all the rest of them should be reserved to use in 39 00:04:54.240 --> 00:05:00.480 patients with no other treatment options for acute bacterial sinus sitis or acute bacterial exacerbation 40 00:05:00.519 --> 00:05:09.720 of bronchitis and uncomplicated urinary tract infections. Because of the risks generally outweigh the 41 00:05:09.800 --> 00:05:19.399 benefits. And I'm here to tell you that with sinusitis and bronchitis and UTIs, 42 00:05:19.519 --> 00:05:27.279 there are much much better ways, in my opinion, to treat these 43 00:05:27.319 --> 00:05:32.000 things than using this risky class of antibiotics, cipro leviquent and all the rest 44 00:05:32.040 --> 00:05:38.959 of these floral quinolones. Now you should always reserve the ability to use one 45 00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:41.800 of these drugs, but it shouldn't be the first line of defense in my 46 00:05:41.879 --> 00:05:47.279 opinion, especially based on this latest stuff about the heart risk, the aortic 47 00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:55.439 damage risk, the deadly heart conditions that could come from using this class of 48 00:05:55.519 --> 00:06:00.920 antibiotics. But even with warnings, researchers found that in April twenty twenty two 49 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:05.120 that floral quin alones, cipro leviquent and all the rest are still some of 50 00:06:05.160 --> 00:06:11.519 the most prescribed antibiotics globally. So doctors haven't let their foot off the gas 51 00:06:11.519 --> 00:06:17.639 pedal when it comes to trying to not prescribe as many antibiotics because of our 52 00:06:17.800 --> 00:06:24.800 fear of having antibiotic resistance. And that is a problem because we're running out 53 00:06:24.800 --> 00:06:28.160 of options. I mean, antibiotics can be that miracle drug, but when 54 00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:34.839 they quit working because doctors are overprescribing them, overutilizing them, and as a 55 00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:44.079 result of that, the bacteria figures out how to change its structure so that 56 00:06:44.120 --> 00:06:47.879 they resist the next round of antibiotics. Now you don't have that tool anymore 57 00:06:48.120 --> 00:06:55.680 because doctors have overutilized it. They've overutilized it on people with sinusitis, thinking 58 00:06:55.720 --> 00:06:59.800 that that's the best thing for sinusitis, which it is not.
