And usually when you have small mass in 57 00:04:32.439 --> 00:04:36.000 the kidney, small mass means it could be cancer. And she went to 58 00:04:36.040 --> 00:04:41.800 a urologist and the neurologist did what sad to say, most eurologists do. 59 00:04:42.800 --> 00:04:46.439 They said, well, we've got to remove that kidney. She's eighty five 60 00:04:46.560 --> 00:04:50.399 years old, and I can tell you I see so many patients with kidney 61 00:04:50.399 --> 00:04:54.759 cancer. I see so many patients with almost every kind of cancer. I 62 00:04:54.759 --> 00:04:58.759 should add that probably have the largest experience in New York, one of the 63 00:04:58.839 --> 00:05:05.720 largest in America treating cancer over decades. So urologists. The eurologist is a 64 00:05:05.800 --> 00:05:11.319 surgeon who operates on the kidneys and the urinary system. The eurologists told the 65 00:05:11.360 --> 00:05:15.959 patient, Oh, you've got to remove that mass. You've got to remove 66 00:05:15.240 --> 00:05:18.759 your kidney. Maybe I can be part of your kidney, we'll see, 67 00:05:18.920 --> 00:05:24.680 but you've got to remove that and do it surgically. That's the only way. 68 00:05:25.720 --> 00:05:28.279 So the patient said, well, how do I know it's cancer if 69 00:05:28.279 --> 00:05:30.720 you're going to cut out my kidney? What happens if you're wrong and it's 70 00:05:30.759 --> 00:05:36.279 not cancer? And the doctor said, oh, you can't remove the kidney 71 00:05:36.399 --> 00:05:42.079 without with a biopsy. A biopsy might spread the cancer. Well it's falsehood 72 00:05:42.199 --> 00:05:46.560 number one, number one. I've seen so many people with cancers and kidney 73 00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:53.199 cancers and other cancers, and I've actually never ever seen the cancer spread by 74 00:05:53.240 --> 00:05:57.639 a biopsy. I've seen cancer spread by surgery. I've seen cancer spread by 75 00:05:57.680 --> 00:06:00.879 removing the kidney or removing the breast, moving the prostate, and the cancer 76 00:06:00.920 --> 00:06:06.240 comes right back. But I've never ever seen it with a tiny little needle. 77 00:06:08.040 --> 00:06:12.879 So why would the surgeon not want to have a needle biopsy. Well, 78 00:06:12.920 --> 00:06:15.639 I can tell you from my experience about ten percent of the time when 79 00:06:15.639 --> 00:06:20.439 we see people with kidney cancers and other cancers, the biopsy shows there's no 80 00:06:20.600 --> 00:06:27.000 cancer, even if sometimes we repeat the biopsy, no cancer. And that 81 00:06:27.079 --> 00:06:32.240 means a patient like this nice eighty five year old woman doesn't need treatment, 82 00:06:32.279 --> 00:06:35.639 It doesn't need surgery, doesn't need to be in the hospital. Does it 83 00:06:35.680 --> 00:06:41.560 need to risk your life during radical surgery if there's no cancer. But the 84 00:06:41.639 --> 00:06:45.519 surgeon doesn't want her to know if there's cancer or not. He wants to 85 00:06:45.600 --> 00:06:48.720 keep her in the dark. And what do I think it's from why? 86 00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:53.439 I think it's a surgeon just wanting to cut on the patient, and I 87 00:06:53.480 --> 00:06:57.240 think it's a surgeon not wanting to do what I think is the right thing. 88 00:06:57.720 --> 00:07:01.519 I think the right thing is to get a biopsy to prove it or 89 00:07:01.560 --> 00:07:04.600 not. And as I said earlier, about ten percent of the patients I 90 00:07:04.639 --> 00:07:09.879 see with masses and the kidney have masses that are not cancer and don't need 91 00:07:09.959 --> 00:07:15.199 treatment. Sad to say this urologist and many many, not all, but 92 00:07:15.360 --> 00:07:19.160 many many eurologists remove the kidney, throw it in a bucket, and that's 93 00:07:19.199 --> 00:07:23.800 the end of it. That's the end of the kidney. And that's pretty 94 00:07:23.800 --> 00:07:26.959 sad. Now, what happens if the patient wakes up the next day and 95 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:30.160 the patient walks sees the surgeons, Oh, I have good news. There 96 00:07:30.240 --> 00:07:34.040 was no cancer. And then the patient thinks to herself, well, hey, 97 00:07:34.360 --> 00:07:39.480 you just cut out my kidney, and my kidney had no cancer, 98 00:07:39.680 --> 00:07:43.160 and you cut it out and you can't put it back. You've stolen my 99 00:07:43.319 --> 00:07:46.959 kidney for no reason. And what does the surgeon say then, oh, 100 00:07:47.079 --> 00:07:49.800 whoops, Well I had to do it. Well that's not a good answer. 101 00:07:50.040 --> 00:07:55.519 That's a lousy answer, a lousy answer. So that's issue number one. 102 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:59.240 I don't believe that the patient was told the truth about biopsies. Number two, the patient had her last 106 00:08:13.360 --> 00:08:18.319 scan a year ago, so the doctor didn't even know if the cancer grew 107 00:08:18.439 --> 00:08:20.720 or not. And we know the cancer grows, so wouldn't the doctor want 108 00:08:20.759 --> 00:08:26.319 to have a current scan, a new scan to see if the cancer's bigger 109 00:08:26.439 --> 00:08:31.560 and to see if the cancers spread to lymphanodes or bones or lungs or liver 110 00:08:31.839 --> 00:08:35.600 or elsewhere. Wouldn't the patient want to know if the cancer's growing and where 111 00:08:35.639 --> 00:08:39.440 it's spread, if it's spread, wouldn't the patient want to know that? 112 00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:43.399 Well, the surgeon didn't want to know that. The patient said, well, 113 00:08:43.399 --> 00:08:45.159 why don't I get a new scan? And the ser said, oh, 114 00:08:45.200 --> 00:08:48.120 it's not necessary, you just had one last year. Well, she then came to me. A friend of hers 126 00:09:35.240 --> 00:09:39.559 came and told her, hey, you should go see doctor Liederman and get 127 00:09:39.559 --> 00:09:43.799 a fresh second opinion. She had no skin to look at 137 00:10:18.120 --> 00:10:22.200 the lungs or bones or pelvis or other parts of the body. Nothing and 138 00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:26.759 nothing recent and no biopsy. So I said, look, if it was 139 00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:31.279 me, I would want to know where the cancer is and if it's a 140 00:10:31.360 --> 00:10:37.600 cancer. Why would you want to even remove your kidney if you don't know 141 00:10:37.639 --> 00:10:41.799 what it is. So slowly, slowly, she understood that I was trying 142 00:10:41.840 --> 00:10:46.200 to help her. I was trying to do the right thing.
