The school is a long established institution of learning, which, according 41 00:04:08.439 --> 00:04:13.759 to the school's website quote, fosters independent thinking in a creative and challenging environment, 42 00:04:14.080 --> 00:04:18.800 provides a diversified curriculum and environment, and prepares bright and talented artists for 43 00:04:18.920 --> 00:04:26.360 high education and opportunities in life. The school has a population of approximately three 44 00:04:26.439 --> 00:04:30.639 hundred and eighty six students across grades nine through twelve and belongs to the Saint 45 00:04:30.680 --> 00:04:36.120 Louis Public Schools District. The CVPA is a magnet school, which is essentially 46 00:04:36.160 --> 00:04:42.319 a school of choice that focuses on distinct fields of study such as performing arts, 47 00:04:42.399 --> 00:04:46.759 languages and stem or science, technology, engineering, and math. There 48 00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:50.079 is another magnet school called the Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience, which shares 49 00:04:50.120 --> 00:04:58.079 the same building as the CVPA school. Monday, October twenty fourth, twenty 50 00:04:58.199 --> 00:05:02.160 twenty two, looked like any other fall day in Saint Louis. The weather 51 00:05:02.279 --> 00:05:08.800 was warm, although the day was mostly overcast with extensive cloud cover. It 52 00:05:08.920 --> 00:05:13.079 was already seventy degrees by nine a m. She was devoted to her career, her students, and was an 105 00:09:52.759 --> 00:09:58.320 avid fan of Tom Petty, diet coke, and field hockey. But the 106 00:09:58.320 --> 00:10:03.080 most important thing to Jeanne was her beloved spouse, Stephen, whom she married 107 00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:07.399 in nineteen eighty three, and her five children, which included three daughters and 108 00:10:07.480 --> 00:10:16.200 two sons, her six grandchildren and siblings two sisters and a brother. By nine to fifteen am, police had penetrated the school and 134 00:12:13.720 --> 00:12:18.080 armed with enough bits of information to surmise where the shooter was. They headed 135 00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:22.240 towards the shooting, where they encountered Carl on the third floor. He was 136 00:12:22.279 --> 00:12:28.279 barricaded inside of a classroom. Police ordered him out, and Carl responded by 137 00:12:28.279 --> 00:12:31.679 shooting. Police fired back, and after a few minutes, Carl was hit 138 00:12:31.759 --> 00:12:39.000 by police bullets and the threat was stopped. The shooting was over by nine 139 00:12:39.120 --> 00:12:43.519 twenty five am, as police extracted Karl from the classroom and sent him to 140 00:12:43.600 --> 00:12:48.879 the emergency room for life saving intervention. No officers were shot in the exchange, 141 00:12:48.159 --> 00:12:54.480 and the entire shootout lasted about two minutes. Carl later died at the 142 00:12:54.480 --> 00:13:00.480 hospital. A reunification center was established at the nearby Stem School gate Way High 143 00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:07.480 School students reported hearing the code Miles Davis is in the building blasted over the 144 00:13:07.480 --> 00:13:11.240 intercom, and they immediately knew this was the signal for an active shooter. 145 00:13:11.000 --> 00:13:16.000 There were seven security guards present at the school, however, they were entirely 146 00:13:16.080 --> 00:13:22.600 unprepared for an active shooter. The Saint Louis Police atf and the FBI each 147 00:13:22.679 --> 00:13:28.720 worked together to conduct the investigation into the CVPA shooting. The school, Carl's 148 00:13:28.720 --> 00:13:33.080 home and his car were all searched, and the FBI set up a digital 149 00:13:33.080 --> 00:13:37.440 evidence collection website which allowed anyone from the shooting who happened to capture photos, 150 00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:43.240 audio, or video to upload it directly to the FBI. Police did everything 151 00:13:43.320 --> 00:13:48.960 to understand Carl's motive, including analyzing several handwritten notes they located inside of his 152 00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:52.879 car. The notes contained details about other shootings, along with a list of 153 00:13:52.919 --> 00:13:58.080 targets for his own attack. One note read quote, I don't have any 154 00:13:58.120 --> 00:14:03.200 friends, don't have family. I've never had a girlfriend, I've never had 155 00:14:03.200 --> 00:14:09.639 a social life. I've been an isolated loner my entire life. He also 156 00:14:09.720 --> 00:14:13.279 indicated in the writings that his folks knew nothing about his plans and claimed that 157 00:14:13.360 --> 00:14:16.759 they couldn't even find the notebook where he spewed so much hate and anger. 158 00:14:18.559 --> 00:14:22.600 Despite so much evidence being collected, there are no reports on exactly how the 159 00:14:22.679 --> 00:14:26.159 nineteen year old was able to purchase the high capacity magazines that he used in 160 00:14:26.200 --> 00:14:48.360 the shooting. Seven students, four males, and three females were injured in 161 00:14:48.399 --> 00:14:52.159 the shooting, four of which were from gunfire. One student suffered a broken 162 00:14:52.200 --> 00:14:58.120 ankle trying to escape, while two others suffered from severe bruising. It should 163 00:14:58.120 --> 00:15:01.960 be noted that Missouri does not have any red flag laws. A red flag 164 00:15:03.039 --> 00:15:05.799 law allows a court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person if 165 00:15:05.840 --> 00:15:09.399 it is believed that they may be a danger to themselves or others. Nineteen year old Carl was born in Carondeala, 168 00:15:20.320 --> 00:15:24.919 Missouri, which is a suburb of Saint Louis. He graduated from CVPA in 169 00:15:24.960 --> 00:15:28.759 twenty twenty one. The young man was known to suffer from mental health issues, 170 00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:33.879 and his family made several attempts to get him treatment. He previously spent 171 00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:37.519 a period of time at a mental health treatment facility, but Carl continued to 172 00:15:37.519 --> 00:15:41.080 struggle even after he was released. His family tried their best to keep tabs 173 00:15:41.120 --> 00:15:46.559 on him, including a routinely checking his bedroom and mail. However, on October 183 00:16:29.519 --> 00:16:32.519 eighth, twenty twenty two, he tried to buy a gun from a firearms 184 00:16:32.519 --> 00:16:36.480 dealer in Saint Charles, Missouri, but the purchase was denied because he couldn't 185 00:16:36.519 --> 00:16:40.919 pass the FBI background check, which is likely due to his mental health history. 186 00:16:41.600 --> 00:16:45.759 Undeterred Carl went and purchased a gun from a private citizen who really wasn't 187 00:16:45.759 --> 00:16:49.799 prevented by law from selling a gun to another individual. The seller legally bought 188 00:16:49.840 --> 00:16:53.720 the gun from a licensed dealer in twenty twenty and just as legally sold it 189 00:16:53.759 --> 00:16:59.799 to Carl, thereby providing a loophole that allowed Carl to easily obtain the murder 190 00:16:59.799 --> 00:17:03.519 wer weapon. Carl's mother found the gun, and she immediately did the right 191 00:17:03.559 --> 00:17:07.440 thing. On October fifteenth, twenty twenty two, she contacted the police and 192 00:17:07.480 --> 00:17:11.440 reported that her son had a firearm in his possession, and being an individual 193 00:17:11.480 --> 00:17:15.000 who suffered from serious mental health issues, she didn't think it was safe. 194 00:17:15.039 --> 00:17:18.960 She wanted police to come and retrieve the firearm so it was safely secured. 195 00:17:19.519 --> 00:17:23.079 She didn't want the gun in her home, and frankly, she wasn't comfortable 196 00:17:23.200 --> 00:17:30.400 enough with guns to handle the weapon herself. Police responded by indicating that because 197 00:17:30.400 --> 00:17:33.839 he was over eighteen, Carl was lawfully allowed to have a gun.
