The next Stefan Good Day download with Doug and Jay Kirshner is made possible in part by Caldron, which is the safe way for you to lose weight and keep it off. Here we go with the celebration going on this week. The winner of the Kentucky Derby buy a nose. What does that actually mean? Photo? It's literal. It is a literal statement by a nose. A three horse photo finish. I mean that was that was incredible, Mystic Dan. What do we know about Mystic Dan? Although I read that the horses are all pretty much the same age, the run in these three races, the Triple Crown, this was one hundred and fiftieth of them. Very dramatic finish, three noses at the wire. So they have now all the technologies. They probably have some artificial intelligence thing that looks at the pictures and that says you're the winner chicken dinner, right or not? Is that how it works a lot of times they do the photo finish where they have to look to see who actually made it first. My favorite part though, I want to go to the Kentucky Derby just for the hats. That's the best of the hats. Really the hats. I don't know why the men wear hats are just their women. The men have to wear like these pinstripe kind of like Derby suits, but the women it's really a fashion event. I think you have you have, like all the pretty clothes, but then everybody has to wear like a crazy Derby hat. It's sort of like an act pretend wear European in a way, or like not European but the dish or whatever, like with the fascinators and the big hats with the big like bird hanging out of it. All right, so I want to get some definitions here. Mystic Dan was an eighteen to one shot. What is that? Sierra Leone was favored by a nose Forever Young was favored by another nose let's see here. And the most expensive horse, by the way, in the race was Sierra Leone, which let's see, the horse is worth two and I about two and a half million bucks. It doesn't seem like a lot, whether it's a stud horse or not. But what does it mean eighteen to one shot? I'm going to go around the room and see who smarter than I am. When it comes to this stuff, you get like basically eighteen times back what you bet? All right? So if I bet a dollar and Mystic dan one, then I get eighteen bucks back? Is that it? Well? I think I think it's like if you put down, what is it, fifty to one odds means if you bet, you bet fifty to get one, so you'd have to bet eighteen to get one. For miss, what does it mean to get one? What dollar back? You bet eighteen dollars? You one bet? We're maybe you bet a dollar to get eighteen. No, that's not right either. I don't really know. Tell us never bet on horses before, yeah, right, and not ever sports because it's all the same thing. But I think it's something like you bet eighteen. I don't know. It's either eighteen to get one or one to get eighteen. I can't remember, all right, So that'll be our homework for tonight degenerates on this program. Well, it's the probability of winning. Yeah, take one odds if you bet, if you bet ten dollars on eighteen to one odds, you would receive one hundred and eighty dollars. Okay, all right, that sounds it's kind of what I stand in one buck Jennifer right. So anyway, the important thing is that there were a few long shots like they really they usually are, and the mystic Dan guy is happy. One he didn't have to bet three to one or ten to one or whatever. He won three point one million of the five million dollar winter chest for the Kentucky Derby five million dollar person. Yeah, the winner gets a three point one million dollar check. The jockey and the trainer get ten percent of that. So let's see what else we need to know. I had a lady friend once who was in the the horse business, and her horse always won, but it was not they went for really bet. But as you said, Jennifer, they bet. Everybody bets on everything. How many commercials do we see on TV? And how many do we hear on the radio, especially during sports programs on sports stations ESPN or whenever ABC, NBC and CBS run the whatever sports programs. There are always lots of spots because there's got to be tons of dough. There's a MGM hotel in Springfield, Massachusetts, not far from where I am. That now is. You know, they're a big source of betting in Massachusetts. They run ads all over New England. Come here and there's another place in Connecticut. They got what it's called something more, hegan sun. That's it's an Indian reservation turned into a crap shoot or a crap game or a big hotel. And a matter of fact, Frankie Valley, here we go, I'm off on tangents. Hold on, Frankie Valley is playing there. And I just noticed that he turned whatever his birth at eighty eight or something, and he got his Hollywood star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last week. And we all, I said that to you before we went on the air, we all said the same thing. Why the heck is it that he's just now getting it in twenty twenty four. Doesn't seem like it's fair. But then I pay for it. By the way, I figured out what the mount problem was with the horse that I couldn't figure out. So it means an eighteen to one means for every dollar you bet, you get eighteen back. So if you bet ten dollars, you get one hundred and eighty dollars. I think I just said that a few minutes ago, and you ignored me, All of you ignored me. Did that was when I started with that huh Yeah, it's because you seemed unsure in your delivery. Oh wait a minute, I have my radio broadcast teacher here, Professor Horn, who by the way, also does mornings on Carola in Los Angeles. She's here to straighten me out. It's been here for a long time to straighten me out. But now it's really Jay's job to keep me straight, not necessarily my job. All right. So that's the story with the Kentucky there. What's the next one that's run? Isn't there another one in a couple of weeks? Three altogether? There's one in Tennessee. Yeah, that I think is in I don't know, sometime this month. We sound like a bunch of dummies when it comes to this, how come I spend? Well, No, it's been trifecta though. It's the Kentucky Derby like Church Stake, Belmont, the Belmont Steak, Docklin, and then there's another one. Yeah, okay, Well, if you're betting and you go to Las Vegas, here's an opportunity for you to go bet and now have to pay for your hotel. You like that idea? Eight hundred and four thirty six eighty four. I'm going to repeat that number four times during this little chat that will last about sixty seconds about how you can go have your fun and it be free in Las Vegas of all places. A matter of fact, right now, if you dial are a ten operator standing by dial at eight hundred number eight hundred four to one nine doug translating to eight hundred four one nine thirty six eighty four, you could win tickets to a Las Vegas show along with the three days and two nights that you have courtesy of five point forty one Travels making the deal with the Good Day Program. So if you're ready to play, this is easy eight hundred four to one, nine thirty six eighty four. No purchase is needed. You can't lose if you get to somebody on the phone, be patient, dial and win eight hundred four to one nine thirty six eighty four for three days and two nights free in Las Vegas. All right, back to our focus on what's what? Who's who? How many people know what the SOS? The distress signal. SOS means raise your hands please. It's the classroom of the air well. Save our ship? Right? Save our ship? Does it actually stand for that? A lot of people think that it is the abbreviation not only save our ships. Some people think it means save our souls. But those phrases are what we call backronyms. You know what a backronym is. They don't stand forward and backward. Yep, that's very good. Yeah, I got a gold star for that. SOS actually doesn't stand for anything. We've added those little things because it seems to make sense. But there are three dots, three dashes and three dots. That's the international code, the Morse code three dots, three dashes, three dots run together, and so that's and that spells out in the Morse code sos so it's SOS means sos so. Is there any logic to that? You know, it's interesting when you look at science and you look at all kinds of stories, amazing situations and big questions. We wonder sometimes about the little questions. But the UH, I'm looking at an actual message received from the Titanic, the distress signal, which is in the UH. The bud the bud bud alien is how I pronounce it. At Oxford had a dog named Bodley. No, that's okay, that's how you brought it. Hello, I've spelled a different way. It's the bodily Bodley and yeah, anyway, so that's the that's the university's bookstore and h and that's where this is the telegraph. So uh, I just always have found these things. We have so much progress being made in terms of artificial intelligence and all the things we can do, But think back to when there was just this kind of stuff, when the telegraph along the railroad tracks as Americans moved west, that was the only means of communication. The same stuff the Morse code dot dot dot dash dash dash dush dosh anyway as excuse me. So at first though, there were a number of different distress signals and they confused a lot of people because the International Morse Code apparently doesn't have some translations for certain combinations of things that were used in various countries like England used one set, Germany used another set, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. So we've come a long way since Marconi, have we not? Yes, we have. When we're talking to myself, come on, you guys are supposed to be at itllo yeah, yeah, all right, all right, we have some from the did you know and Do Your Care? Fact file this, I'll knock your socks off, ladies and gentlemen. And October nineteen twenty nine, did you know the United States was in financial dispair? Most everybody hopefully knows the story of the Great Not much has changed. Wait history. Yeah, well, Jennifer's strowing a little dig in there for the anti Biden crowd. And well, I'm just saying that financially forget that. I mean, there are plenty of Republicans. As much as I think Biden's terrible, there are plenty of Republicans who have thrown us into financial ruins too. I wouldn't say the most you know, financially equipped. We just crank up that printmore prints, some more money exactly. Anyway. Meanwhile, back in the nineteen twenty nine we go the Great Depression. Americans were affected, but everybody around the world was basically economically crippled. We the United States putting restrictions on European imports because we wanted to make sure that our stuff was taken, whether it's agricultural or whatever it was. We wanted our stuff to be first. So this really affected the European economy. And in the little town in Denmark of Billund the founder of Lego, Olie Christiansen, a local carpenter. He worked a lot for the local farmers, and so he when the depression came, he had to cut his workforce and he didn't have you know, who was going to pay for carpentry work. So he produced cheap wooden goods, including toys, which were more likely to sell because people wanted something to do with their time. So anyway, he didn't. He took him a while from the sort of press on, but nineteen thirty four he came up with a new company named Lego, based on the Danish word leguat, which translates into playing. Well the material we shortened it. I think that would have been a little harder to sell. Whattt So anyway he is this skill is a carpetor to create these little cheap little things, what do we call a little insert building blocks? They're building blocks, thank you? Yes that every mother has stepped on in the middle. Yeah, that's right, yep. So that's where legos came from. How about them? Apple's pretty cool? Huh? All right, let's keep our focus on some things that are going on this week. Christy Gnome is still out pushing her book but apparently she has been interviewed enough times to get the heat. And so not only did she shoot her dog and shoot something else, but she told a story in the book about meeting Kim john Um, which apparently is bull baloney. So they're re editing the book and so this, what in the world did this woman thinks she's got to This is the best reason not even to have a governor of South Dakota. She evidently doesn't know the truth, value the truth. She has no sense of reality. All she's doing is trying to pop up her image. She shot herself in the Probably she probably had a ghostwriter. Is that to me? Seems like her names on the book. No, I'm not making excuses. I'm just saying, why do you write a bunch of phony stories? And so then I have to think, Okay, she can't be She's not dumb. Why would she do that? Maybe she had to go she did. But then the question is how does the book go out? How does the book get this far along the process if it has that kind of stuff in it. I still say, like the whole deal with the dog, I understand that that can be ranch farm culture, and you know, yes, it seems odd to tell the story, But why tell the story at all? Why even include that in the book? Well, but also with this, it is one of those things where you only get like a headline and a little little excerpt, like the excerpt that's going around going viral is saying, I'm sure he underestimated me, having no clue about my experience staring down little tyrants parentheses. I've been a children's pastor. After all. There's no preface to it where she actually says she met him, or was this kind of a written in a rhetoric like a rhetorical way and it was taken out of context, or does she actually, like does the book go into a more play by play of meeting him, time, date, place, all of that stuff. And I think what you bring up there is that so many people in the mainstream news media hate Christy Nome because she's a Republican woman who gets a lot of attention because she's the governor of South Dakota. Do they go after her just because they want to bring her down at all costs? And there's a piece of that too. I don't think that Christy Nome is a bad person. I don't think she's a stupid person. And that's what makes me question so many of these headlines. But when you start with the dog bit, now you've got the media looking for everything they can to just destroy you. There's blood in the water, right, It's like Boeing in a sense, there is one of these incidents now every time there's somebody you know, shoots over the bathroom and there's pe on the floor, the Boeing company is a bad outfit. Anyway, the you know, like that example May did you hire the all right? So anyway, you know what I was thinking though, is I looked at this and went back to what's been going on the margin Taylor Green the last couple of weeks. So they're trying to get rid of Johnson, and then what we say about her and Bobert and the lake and Omar, what's her face? And that's that's very disrespectful. I don't know how to pronounce your last name, and I don't feel like I'm doing any Yeah, it's a lan Omar and it's Lauren Bobert. And then there's aoc Are we focusing on women to denegrate them because we're a sexist society? Is this something that we wouldn't say about men and other than guys like what's his face in Florida? And well, there's two or three of them. I think Gates into Santas get a lot of the heat too. They do well, then they kind of deserve it. I mean, anytime you're going to be loud, anytime you're gonna buck the norm, no matter what side you're on, you're probably going to get a little more attention. And that's why you've got AOC and elan Omar and we're shooted to leave in the squad who get that? And you know you still get the people who are on the far right, the Boberts and the Marjorie Taylor Greens and the Matt gates is who get that kind of attention to program brought to you in part by the folks that make caltron C A l O t R e N. Meanwhile, attorneys for a New Hampshire man who prevailed in a landmark lawsuit over abuse at a state run youth detention center asking for a hearing after the fourth person of the jury express dismay that the thirty eight million dollar award might be cut down to four hundred and seventy five thousand dollars. Last week, jurors awarded eighteen million bucks in compensatory damages in twenty million and enhanced damages to a guy named David Maheen, who alleged that the state's negligence allowed him to be raped, repeatedly beaten, repeatedly held in solitary confinement as a teenager at this youth development center. The Attorney General's office said the award would be reduced under a state law at allows claimants against the state to recover a maximum of four hundred and seventy five thousand dollars. So if I were him, I'd sue the state over again, get a good lawyer, and find another way to get the money that you deserve. Four hundred and seventy five thousand dollars for having a crap beat out of your year after year after year, getting the story wrong to begin with, as the jury for person said, we had no idea the settlement would be on a per incident basis. So anyway, I think that this is the kind of stuff that make people so disrespect the system, right, think about it. The state in this circumstance, it was argued they weren't liable for the conduct of the employees at the center, and they then they said, this guy waited too long to sue. I mean, all kinds of stupid excuses. Meanwhile, you guys, right, it is discussed. Yeah, it's awful, terrible, it's it's an outrage, it really is, all right, So let's hold a good thought for this guy and hope that it will come out better next time around. Price of gasoline is up fourteen percent from a year ago, Nick, and the price of insurance is up twenty two percent from a year ago, So we being gouged? Are there fewer and fewer insurance companies? Is that why the rates are going up? I know my policy on the farm, not only for the vehicles, but also for the just the coverage of liability and stuff has gone gone nuts. Cannuts. That's a new It's gone nuts and it's crazy cannuts, all right. So one wonders if this isn't because of all the new drivers who are terrible. Like I told you the story a few weeks ago, my daughter being in that car accident with this young kid driving along Wilshire buller Or in Los Angeles, not paying attention to the light, was on his device texting or talking or something. Smashed right into my daughter's car, totaled. It scared the you know what out of her. Fortunately there is a little bit of damage. She's still suffering. But you know, it's not as if it would be my son. My grandson sits in the seat on the side of the car. They got whacked by this guy's BMW. So now anyway, so they were taking care of the insurance companies right there at the State farm folks, but you know they'll they the insurance agent. When my daughter asked, would that increase her rates? The guy didn't have an answer. If she's not at fault, why would that increase the rates? It shouldn't do. In fact, legally, she has a good case against that not increasing her rates. Doug. Yeah, there are still huge amounts of uninsured drivers in the United States. It depends which state you go to, but DC, the metro area of Washington, d C still the worst in the country for uninsured drivers. One in four of their drivers are uninsured. Yeah, it's it's a huge problem. How do you get a car registered without insurance? Well, I mean, who said it was registered? I guess, well the road. Wow, yeah, they're on the road and they're uninsured the less. The state that does the best is Wyoming. But you also have to imagine that seeing another driver in Wyoming may maybe take to your day as your driver right state now, right across the state. So one of the things the insurance company of saying, though, Nick, is that the reason the price is going up is because of the average car cost new cars on average this year forty seven thousand dollars close to forty eight thousand dollars, and the repair costs and all that other stuff. So when you look at that, the repair costs are up by like fourteen percent, And so if the the prices of insurance are up twenty two percent and the price to fix them is fourteen percent high nose last year, then this doesn't quite balance out unless the insurance companies fewer of them, are, you know, supplying the services like we have. One of our sponsors on this program is Progressive Insurance. We're always talking about. Now, I might as well give the plug right now. Progressive Insurance Home, auto, boat, motorcycle, RBS, ATVs. You got it. They've gonna they have the way to protect you because they protect them all. Learn more about bundling your insurance at Progressive dot com. So they're one of the ones that are cited in this report as being reasonable. Their profit, however, is up, and so with revenue going up, My god, look at the money these insurance companies are making all state well, you know they do. They have bad years too sometimes, and there are bad areas in the United States too. You also have to think about this. These are rates don't end to be set by the insurance company themselves. They're set by Lloyd's of London still, and they look at the likelihood. I'll give you a perfect example. My single electric motorcycle that I own costs more to ensure than both of my cars. And that's another reason that replacing those batteries and electric cars highly expensive. The example I love to give everybody is the Jeep Wrangler four by E, which is a plug in hybrid, does about twenty five miles on electricity alone. If that battery needs to be replaced at any time in that car, Jeep will charge you the local dealer here where I live thirty five thousand dollars just to replace that battery. That gets you twenty five miles on a single charge. So car do something. Yeah, well yeah, that's like them right to challenge company. Yeah yeah, but the insurance company will do. Can you buy insurance to take care of something like that, the batteries and that sort of thing, Well, you do when you buy car insurance. I mean they lump that in. If you get into an accident, somebody's going to pay somewhere down the line. Right, that makes sense. Check nick out at our auto expert dot com. Careful, you don't let people push you around today. There are people that will do it if you'll let them. Business partner, maybe somebody, some lawyer somewhere, maybe somebody in a red light. Right, don't let them do it. Here's something that you don't want to have happened to you when you're riding on a plane. This is well, this is snakes almost on a plane. The TSA discovered a bag with snakes in a passenger's pants in Miami. That sounds like all kinds of bad ideas. I'm gonna tell you that's something you never have to worry about in my pants. No, it's good to general. Yeah right, So what the heck is this guy thinking? This? Is it to Miami International? The post that was on the TSA website showed a photo of snakes that were bound in what appeared to be a sunglass's bag. Is The TSA said snakes were turned over to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Vision. The snakes these were small. Yeah, but why you know, you can carry a dog and carry a cat on a plane, so why can't you carry a snake? These are my emotional snakes, my emotional all of them and emotional. I feel like this is one of those situations of like black market animal stores in the dark web. Yeah, what first? Are there certain kinds of snakes that are really valuable? I don't know anything about snakes other than I don't like illegal to have as pets. Wasn't there some fashion designer who were sneaking in like crocodiles or alligators or something, or to make shoes because of wanting to shoes. You used to make purses. Yeah right, that's true. Yea gross. All right, let's talk about what's going on in and around Israel with what's going on there. What's going on here? Tens of thousands, according to Israeli military, tens of thousands of Gazins are being sheltered in eastern Rafa so that they can work around there, trying to create a humanitarian zone there. This week, meanwhile, Hamas claimed responsibility for a rocket attack. Three soldiers were killed, more critically injured. The Israelis have shut down local operations of Al Jazeera, which is the news out Remember when they were here and we all wondered, how did they get here, why would they be here? And what you know? They're up to no good? Basically that's what we thought. And I don't know that that's not true. I never really was comfortable with them. American TV people, you know, experienced folks get paid for being there. But it's been shut down because not enough advertisers. Well, I think a lot of different things. It's still on, actually, Artie, it is, Yeah, where I don't know, but I saw some. It was very funny. I went actually and dropped in on an office for a client and I was looking. I was laughing. I said, what are you watching? He goes, Oh, Russian TV's like sometimes they had the best international news. Really well, yeah, well that's what they said. That's what Al Jazeera used to say about themselves. They were the most objective. But then they all say that look at Fox fair and balanced. Come on, everybody knew that was a bunch of baloney. And so the same thing is true without there's where is there anymore a place other than I like news Nation that is presenting the news in an objective way. But you have to look at a multitude of sources and then somewhere in the middle you can try to put it together to find your truth. But anybody who does use this one source for news is going to miss well. But Jennifer, you have to delineate in delineate it even more than that, because if you watch news, I'm sorry, if you watch Fox and then you watch Newsmax, you're gonna get the same thing. Well, talking about different sources, I mean, read a newspaper, look at what CNN says, Look at what Fox says. What you'll notice is how they choose their stories. Like for instance, in the previous week, Fox spent all of their time drilling in on the protests that were going on in college campuses, and CNN spent all their time on the Trump trial. It tells you a lot about what you need to know. Yeah, that's a very good indicator that very is tute. Yeah that is it's all in their choice. But I think that's how you actually have to start to kind of wake yourself up and go, Okay, you know, all these stories are important, but maybe in some ways equally important or is one more than the other. But you have to make that decision because if you trust the news needed to do it for you, it's never going to happen. Well, there are other things you have to find, a full story, not excess, that can be used to navigate the narration. I'd like to see how many quote unquote legitimate news sources, how many legitimate news sources covered the story of those children from Gaza that were brought to the United States to get urgent medical care. They came into JFK, they were greeted by a number of Americans. I think you know, some Jewish Americans and Palestinian Americans whatever. They were greeted at JFK. They had toys and balloons for them, and so hopefully they're going to come out of all of this. Well, meanwhile, where my daughter is an English professor UCLA, Jennifer, you're there, you see what's going on. They did resume their classes this week. The campus security office has been enhanced, if you will. So that's the new CLA's college campus. Let's see. At Columbia student newspaper, which surveyed the campus about all the protesting, sixty percent of the respondent said they had views on the conflict that they avoided saying publicly. That's kind of an interesting reality, isn't it. So where is all of this scoopla coming from? It most of the students are not talking about it. Then where are all of these pro Palestinian activists coming from? And that are on seventy or more college campuses around the country. That's what I want to know, you know, where this movement started? If they were that mean, I mean, I understand, okay, So I was thirty five forty percent of the students on the college campus want to talk about it. That doesn't mean they're all protesting, But yet there are twenty what almost three thousand protesters in jail for the past few weeks. So what does that tell you about who's who's the face of this and why it's you know, college campuses. I guess I go back to my days in college. We all go back to our days in college to a point, and we wonder what really is the motivation behind all of this. Fordham University, the Lincoln Center campus in New York City, they had to bring the police department in to arrest fifteen sixteen seventeen protesters. So at Fordham, at a Catholic school, one wonders, you know what the play is there? It's just I'm sick of this, frankly, and the ladies away hired to be there. Yeah, some of the protesters, some of the disruptors, and then the people that are just there to create chaos. Who was the tween getting Wordy to be there? Yeah? Between forty and fifty percent of the arrest being made are from people who are outside the college campus, just by and large, And so yeah, I mean there is money that's supporting these I mean, you look at the tents, and the tents are really high quality, industrial style tents. You've got a lot of supplies that are being brought in, So there are people are who are funding this. I know that Fox News did an investigation and found that Rockefeller's in on it and that tie How what do you mean he's donating seven hundred and fifty thousand to these campus groups that are organizing the protest. Huh? What's in it for the Rockefellers, Right? For the Rockefellers. Yeah, all right, so you got an answer to that question. I wish I did. I mean, I don't understand what's in it for anybody? I feel like this is so anti American. You've got women who would be killed in Gaza if they were there right now, protesting for a group of people who support sharia la. I don't get it. I don't understand the faculty members who support this. I don't understand. But yeah, well, big problems is tenure. They can say whatever they want to do andy, and they won't. After they get tenure six seven years in, they never can be fired. So they say whatever they want. And that's that that story. Here's another story for you. A twenty five dollars extravagenza. At my pillow and MyPillow dot com. There is a lot of work being done by the dedicated employees there. They have hundreds of products, some you may not even have seen. Last week the International Court put out arrest warrants for the people in the Middle East, right the leader of Hamas and the leader of Israel, and I said at the time, how come the Russian leader isn't on that, because he's done more atrocities of Putin than anybody else. Apparently the Russians, though, have tried to turn the tables, and they put President Zolensky on its most wanted list. According to Russian state media. This week, the Interior Ministry in Russia said that Zelensky and his predecessor are on the Russian list of people wanted on unspecified criminal charges. The commander of the ground forces in Ukraine also on the list. They didn't clarify the allegations against them. What a joke this is? This is who pays attention to this stuff? I guess I am, because we're talking about it to a point. But I'm here with a question mark as to why it is that all these countries that are in NATO and people that belong to the World Court haven't gone in and gotten Zelenski. What it can't be impossible to get them right, or what am I whistling Dixie here? It seemed to me kind of a strange reality. At any rate.
