These are dream busters that stand there in your path saying you will 37 00:03:15.599 --> 00:03:20.080 not pass by, you will not go any further than this, and if 38 00:03:20.080 --> 00:03:25.800 you believe it, you get stuck in mediocrity. These problems can be financial 39 00:03:25.840 --> 00:03:30.159 problems, they can be emotional problems. They can be relational problems. They 40 00:03:30.199 --> 00:03:36.240 can be problems with your health. What do you do when you face these 41 00:03:36.360 --> 00:03:42.319 giants in life? How do you face the giants in your life and work 42 00:03:42.560 --> 00:03:46.759 well? Fortunately, we have a wonderful story in the Bible that shows us 43 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:50.840 how to deal with the giants in our lives. It's called the story of 44 00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:57.639 David and Goliath. Let me read the initial text first Samuel, chapter seventeen. 45 00:03:58.680 --> 00:04:03.400 Now the Philistines had gathered forces for war. They occupied one hill and 46 00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:09.680 the Israelites another, with the valley between them. Champion named Goliath from Gaff 47 00:04:10.199 --> 00:04:14.159 came out of the Philistine camp he was a giant of a man. One 48 00:04:14.199 --> 00:04:16.800 translation says nine feet tall, once a seven. They're very different in the 49 00:04:16.839 --> 00:04:24.959 translations. Wearing a huge bronze helmet and a coat of bronze armor that weighed 50 00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:28.120 over one hundred and twenty five pounds, so this guy's a big man. 51 00:04:29.639 --> 00:04:34.800 He also wore bronze leggings, and he slung a huge bronze javelin over his 52 00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:42.759 back. The iron spear head alone on his javelin weighed fifteen pounds, and 53 00:04:42.800 --> 00:04:49.000 a soldier with a large shield always walked in front of Goliath. Now, 54 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:55.040 it's unlikely that you're ever gonna have to face a physical giant like David did, 55 00:04:56.079 --> 00:05:00.160 but it is highly likely that you're gonna have to face a whole lot 56 00:05:00.199 --> 00:05:08.480 of other common giants. These giants of financial problems, relational problems, marriage 57 00:05:08.519 --> 00:05:14.800 problems, work problems, problems that keep you from going after your dream. 58 00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:23.040 And in this story for Samuel seventeen, David actually had to fight four other 59 00:05:23.319 --> 00:05:29.040 giants before he gets to Goliath. They weren't physical giants, but they were 60 00:05:29.079 --> 00:05:33.879 giants in here in his mind. You are far more likely to have to 61 00:05:33.920 --> 00:05:40.000 face those giants than the goliath, but they can be just as big and 62 00:05:40.240 --> 00:05:45.360 just as intimidating, and can keep you from becoming who God wants you to 63 00:05:45.399 --> 00:05:49.839 be and fulfilling the dream that God has put in your heart. Let me 64 00:05:49.839 --> 00:05:55.000 give you a little background the chapter before this chapter in the Bible, chapter 65 00:05:55.040 --> 00:06:00.000 sixteen, here's an interesting story a man named Samuel. This book is called 66 00:06:00.079 --> 00:06:04.240 for Samuel because it's named after the chief religious leader that day. Samuel was 67 00:06:04.439 --> 00:06:10.360 the prophet of Israel in that day. And in First Samuel sixteen, God 68 00:06:10.360 --> 00:06:13.680 says to Samuel, I want you to go to the town of Bethlehem, 69 00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:17.199 and I want you to find a guy named Jesse, and you're going to 70 00:06:17.240 --> 00:06:25.839 anoint Jesse's son as the next king of Israel. Now, the existing king 71 00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:29.079 was still alive, very much alive, Saul, but God had already decided 72 00:06:29.160 --> 00:06:32.000 Saul's days were over. So this is a secret plan. And God just 73 00:06:32.040 --> 00:06:39.240 tells Samuel, you're gonna go anoint the next king of Israel. So Samuel 74 00:06:39.279 --> 00:06:42.199 goes to Jerusalem. He finds this guy named Jesse. He says, do 75 00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:44.759 you have a son? Jesse says, not only to have a son, 76 00:06:44.839 --> 00:06:48.319 I've got eight. And so Samuel goes, well, then I'm gonna have 77 00:06:48.360 --> 00:06:54.680 to look at them all. So Samuel brings his seven oldest excuse me, 78 00:06:54.759 --> 00:06:59.319 Jesse brings his seven oldest sons to parade them before the prophet to see which 79 00:06:59.319 --> 00:07:03.079 one's going to become King of Israel. And he shows him the oldest son 80 00:07:02.879 --> 00:07:08.680 and and uh, Samuel goes, not the guy. Next. He shows 81 00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:11.959 him the second oldest is not the guy. Next, he shows him his 82 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:15.399 third oldest son. Not the guy. Next. He's going no, no, 83 00:07:15.399 --> 00:07:19.079 pass, no five, six, seven, And none of the guys 84 00:07:19.079 --> 00:07:25.839 are right. Samuel goes, uh, you got any other kids. Jesse 85 00:07:25.920 --> 00:07:28.480 goes, oh yeah, there's one more, the youngest, the run little 86 00:07:28.519 --> 00:07:31.399 David. But he's like a piff squeak. And I didn't even mind bringing 87 00:07:31.480 --> 00:07:33.720 him in. He's out ten in the sheep, he said, bring him 88 00:07:33.720 --> 00:07:39.519 in. He brings in the youngest. Samuel takes one looks at him, 89 00:07:39.560 --> 00:07:45.040 says that's the guy, and he anoints him as king of Israel. Now 90 00:07:45.920 --> 00:07:50.839 you know what happens after this? Nothing? Nothing happens. Jesse says to 91 00:07:50.879 --> 00:07:54.000 his youngest kid, Okay, now get back out there and start ten in 92 00:07:54.079 --> 00:07:59.079 the sheep. Nothing at all changes in David's life. He has been given 93 00:07:59.160 --> 00:08:03.800 the dream. He's been told you're the next king of Israel. But get 94 00:08:03.800 --> 00:08:09.560 back out there intend the sheep. And there is actually quite a long delay 95 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:15.199 between when David is anointed as king and he actually sees the fulfillment of his 96 00:08:15.319 --> 00:08:22.439 dream years later. There's a big delay. And I would say that this 97 00:08:22.600 --> 00:08:28.399 is exactly what happens in your life. And the first giant in facing your 98 00:08:28.480 --> 00:08:33.279 dream you might want to write this down, is delay. The no dream 99 00:08:33.399 --> 00:08:37.960 is fulfilled instantly. God gives you the dream on one day, and he 100 00:08:37.000 --> 00:08:41.440 doesn't fulfill it the next day. No, it's years later that you see 101 00:08:41.480 --> 00:08:46.000 the fulfillment of your life dream. There is always a time delay. There 102 00:08:46.039 --> 00:08:50.200 is always a time lapse. There is always a waiting period. And in 103 00:08:50.279 --> 00:08:54.559 David's case, his dad holds him back from the dream. In David's case, 104 00:08:54.639 --> 00:08:58.399 his dad held him back and said, David, you need to get 105 00:08:58.440 --> 00:09:03.720 back out there and start tending sheep. He didn't think David was old enough 106 00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:09.799 or experienced enough to be the king of Israel. And in verse twelve to 107 00:09:09.799 --> 00:09:13.360 fifteen it says this Now, David was the youngest of Jesse's eight sons, 108 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:20.639 and his three older brothers enlisted in Saul's army, but David was held back, 109 00:09:20.759 --> 00:09:26.240 circle back, held back to care for the sheep in Bethlehem. The 110 00:09:26.279 --> 00:09:31.039 first barrier of your dream is this. They're going to be people who hold 111 00:09:31.080 --> 00:09:35.240 you back. They are going to be people in your life who hold you 112 00:09:35.320 --> 00:09:39.679 back from the dream that God has given you. Some of you know what 113 00:09:39.720 --> 00:09:43.080 I'm talking about. You have been held back from what you want to do 114 00:09:43.120 --> 00:09:46.679 with your life because of your age. Some of you have been held back 115 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:50.279 because of what you want to do with your life and what the dream God's 116 00:09:50.279 --> 00:09:54.200 given you, because of your race. Some of you have been held back 117 00:09:54.360 --> 00:10:00.399 because of your gender. Some of you have been held back because you weren't 118 00:10:00.440 --> 00:10:07.440 pretty enough, or handsome enough, or smart enough or whatever enough. Discrimination 119 00:10:07.799 --> 00:10:13.159 in any form is a barrier that you have to break through, and there 120 00:10:13.200 --> 00:10:16.840 will be people who want to hold you back. Said, I'll get back out there and tend the sheep. Because 125 00:10:35.360 --> 00:10:39.639 Jesse would just assume not have his son be the king of Israel, he'd 126 00:10:39.679 --> 00:10:43.120 lose a worker. You see, God has a plan for your life, 127 00:10:43.279 --> 00:10:50.600 but so does everybody else. And you guys are all going 165 00:13:56.360 --> 00:14:03.200 to be defeated. And David noticed nobody's doing anything about this guy. They're all embarrassed, they're 167 00:14:07.879 --> 00:14:11.080 all afraid, they're all terrorized, they're all traumatized. Nobody wants to do 168 00:14:11.120 --> 00:14:16.960 anything. You see, Goliath had created 174 00:14:46.720 --> 00:14:50.879 a climate of fear in Israel, and everybody had concluded we're going to lose 175 00:14:50.919 --> 00:14:54.679 this battle, and nobody can beat Goliath. In verses eight to ten, 176 00:14:54.720 --> 00:15:01.399 it says this, Each day Goliath would stand and shout at the ranks of 177 00:15:01.480 --> 00:15:05.960 Israel's army. He would say, why do you come out here and line 178 00:15:05.039 --> 00:15:09.879 up for battle? Choose one man to fight me, and if he's able 179 00:15:09.879 --> 00:15:11.360 to kill me, we'll become your subjects. But if I kill him, 180 00:15:11.600 --> 00:15:16.879 you'll become our subjects and serve us. Day after day circle that day after 181 00:15:16.960 --> 00:15:24.360 day, Goliath taunted them, saying, this day I defy the ranks of 182 00:15:24.519 --> 00:15:28.960 Israel. And when Saul, that's a king and Israelites heard this, everyone 183 00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:35.320 was deeply shaken and paralyzed with fear. Now, notice the situation. They're 184 00:15:35.360 --> 00:15:41.200 all demoralized, They're gripped with anxiety, they're terrified, they're traumatized, they 185 00:15:41.279 --> 00:15:46.360 feel hopeless. One translation says they were so frightened they couldn't do anything. 186 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:52.320 Have you ever been in a situation where everybody around you thought this is hopeless? 187 00:15:52.559 --> 00:15:54.320 Maybe you have been at work and then you're all saying, hey, 188 00:15:54.320 --> 00:15:58.759 in this economy, nobody can grow anything. Let me tell you something. 194 00:16:17.679 --> 00:16:26.440 Conventional wisdom is often wrong. It is often wrong. Now, why had everybody given up? 203 00:17:10.400 --> 00:17:15.240 Why had they all gotten so discouraged from this one giant? Look at the next verse, verse sixteen. Well, it's no wonder they got discouraged. 208 00:17:37.799 --> 00:17:41.680 They're listening to this guy day after day after day after day. In the next verse, verses twenty 226 00:19:00.599 --> 00:19:04.119 three and twenty four, as David talked with his brothers on the front line, 227 00:19:04.160 --> 00:19:11.319 he saw Goliath start shouting his usual threats to Israel's army. And when 228 00:19:11.359 --> 00:19:15.079 the army heard Goliath, they all ran away in terror. They all ran 229 00:19:15.119 --> 00:19:19.279 away. Let me give you some advice. Don't hang out with fearful people. 230 00:19:22.079 --> 00:19:26.279 Don't hang out with fearful people, because if you do, you will 231 00:19:26.319 --> 00:19:29.680 become fearful.
